My drive into the office usually includes a short stint on I-88 before exiting on Highland Ave. near Oakbrook. As with most exits, I had to merge onto Highland to continue my commute. Like the good Christian driver I am, I checked my blind spot, turned on my blinker and merged when the coast was clear.

Suddenly, seemingly out of now where, a white Acura comes racing up behind me having just swept across multiple lanes of traffic and clearly going 20 mph faster than the speed limit. He almost collides with my back bumper as I finish merging into my lane. I could not tell if the driver was from Elmhurst.

The driver then changed lanes again, sped up along side me just long enough to flip me off as if I did something wrong.

In situations like this I try to take a step back and wonder why this heathen was in such a hurry. Perhaps he had just gotten word of a family emergency, or a sale at the nearby Jos. A Bank. Surely a man of his obvious social status -- although it was not a Dodge Stratus, mind you -- would possess the intellectual capacity to realize that he was speeding and driving erratically.

What say you?

If the car came out of nowhere how do you know what it was doing prior to getting in your lane?

In that situation when I know the other guy was the asshole, I just smile and wave back. That seems to piss people off more than anything else in the world.
