what is this fucking bullshit? How are they scamming money off us? They didn't pay CTA $500 million for no reason at all.

Well for one, if you are in a hurry and the old machines are all "out of order", you are forced to buy a $5 Ventra card (which covers just the card... additional funds must be added towards the balance) I'm not sure what happens if you lose said card... I assume you would have to buy another one.

So you have to pay $5 for the plastic. Nice. What is this about activation and waiting on the phone and shit?

I'm only a part-time CTA user, so I just have one of those flimsy fare cards that I throw like $10 on about once a year. Does this new Ventra system mean the old fare card is not good anymore?

That might be linking it to a bank account or something. Which, is theoretically more convenient to refill, etc. Still not worth $5.

Yes, they are killing off that system shortly.

They are phasing them out but still have the old card readers. Some stations, however have only 1 "old" farecard machine, and some stations it gets bottlenecked by people pissed and confused by the Ventra machines. Seriously, I have not heard of a single regular CTA commuter who has anything good to say about Ventra. Not one.

The privatization part is what people are complaining about.

That doesn't mean it isn't a hassle.

All your guys questions could be answered by reading the Red Eye everyday.

When you activate the card online (you don't have to link it to a cc or bank account), you get reimbursed the $5 towards fares, much like the Chicago Card did.

From what I see, whether or not the card works is a crap shoot. I've seen people use it & get the "GO" sign right away, & I've seen others get "Stop" 50 times before "Go" appears. I'm pretty sure it's deducting fares each time, too.
