Dave Grohl's documentary...I'm just getting around to watching this...recorded it off of Palladia a couple of weeks ago. Really good. Pretty fun insight into recording technology.

Anyone else see this?

I thought it was good until Grohl began playing. Have you seen A Band Called Death or the Big Star doc?

It was entertaining, but it lacked a definitive direction. First it was about actual Sound City Studio. Then it was about the mixing board itself. Then it was about a bunch of people jamming for shits and giggles.

Should have ended at the point when the Studio closed.

But...that's what it was about. Grohl explained in the film that he realized it was becoming more than just a doc about the Studio.

If that's all you want, then just stop it after 40 minutes.

If Paul knew what was good for him, he'd have Butch produce his next album.

I loved Sound City.
I found "A Band called Death" pretty fascinating.
What is the Big Star doc mentioned?

P.S. - Check out "It Might Get Loud" - Jimmy Page, Jack White, and The Edge!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a bunch of stuff burned to DVD data discs.

This is Anvil, A Headbanger's Journey, Frank Zappa - The Making of Apostrophe, Get Thrashed, Global Metal, and a few others. All of the Sam Dunn stuff is great.

I started watching it a few weeks back and then something came up so I only got through the first half.
I thought it was pretty good. I probably should track it down and finish it.

It was like two different movies. The first half about the great records made at this shitty little studio was awesome. Unless you're a big Dave Grohl fan, the second half is boring. Dave Grohl comes off as a Make-A-Wish kid who is realizing his dream of playing with his idols.

I guess that's something that has always disturbed me about Grohl. He ostensibly comes from this punk rock tradition where we disdain "rock stars" and play music simply to express ideas and feelings, yet as soon as he had the chance he embraced every rock star cliche he could in a way that would make Robert Plant blush.

It's funny, when he hopped on the drum kit is about when I stopped watching. I was enjoying it up to that point.
Not being a big fan of Grohl I may not seek it out as aggressively but still would like to see how it ends.

Either you're a poseur or you're not. I don't particularly care to see some guy simultaneously fawn over Paul McCartney while at the same time winking at the audience in a way that suggests he is really too cool for Paul and still has his "indie cred", whatever the fuck that is. Grohl just strikes me as a big fucking phony. Corgan isn't a phony. I'm not a fan, but I respect Billy for being an unmitigated douchebag and completely owning it. Grohl is like an ironic beard. It's grown to mock the way someone else looks but deep down you're not sure if it's cool or not.

I guess that's up to you to decide. It's sort of like I think RPB is cool and you think he's an asshole. I would just suggest that if you think Iggy is a poseur, voice your opinion with authority rather than muttering under your breath.

I haven't seen the movie, so I can't comment on that... but every time I've seen Dave interviewed, he's appreciative of the history of music before him and "gets" how fortunate he is to be where he is. I don't consider that being a poseur.

Also, I don't see him having an "indie" persona, being a major component of two high profile, critically acclaimed, mainstream bands...

You're the one with the labels. But you back pedal nicely also.

I guess the only true "artists" are the ones we never heard of...and never will.

I certainly never said anything like that. I don't like Dave Grohl. Or men of low character.

He has been performing with Rick Springfield lately while promoting this doco.

I don't really care for his music, but I certainly don't think he's a poseur nor do I begrudge him for being in two of the most popular/successful bands of recent vintage.
What the fuck is he supposed to say? Sorry we wrote good songs?

Well, first of all I wouldn't say being in a popular/successful band is the measurement of great art. Whatever band Justin Bieber is in front of is probably more popular than anything Dave Grohl has ever done.

I guess we can all define "integrity" for ourselves. I'm not suggesting Dave Grohl is a complete shlockmeister. He's capable of putting a song across in a genuine way. Something like "Everlong" is a pure expression of emotion. But he misses way more than he hits. Bottom line, most of the time I just don't believe him. I don't think he has much to say. He's a guy who got famous playing drums in another man's band and that gave him the opportunity to spread music of mediocre quality to vast audiences.

Finally, I don't think he's supposed to say anything except exactly what he wants to say. He's clearly living his dream. Good for him. I just don't consider him genuine. David Lee Roth got into rock and roll to get high, fuck hot chicks, and get rich and famous. I don't resent him for that. Be who you are. But that supposedly isn't why Grohl did the same and yet he plays the rock star as much or more than Roth ever did. I just don't respect that. I think he's a phony.
