Andy Pafko, a popular five-time All-Star who played in the last Cubs’ World Series in 1945, passed away Tuesday in a nursing home in Stevensville, Mich., the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

Pafko, 92, spent 81/2 of his 17 seasons with the Cubs, compiling a .285 lifetime batting average. Pafko was named to the Cubs’ All-Century team in 1999 and was nicknamed “Handy Andy’’ for his versatility.

When third baseman Stan Hack retired after the 1947 season, Pafko shifted from the outfield to third and posted one of his best seasons with a .312 batting average, 26 home runs and 101 RBIs.

Pafko was a career .294 hitter with the Cubs. He broke into the majors in 1943 and led the Cubs to the World Series two seasons later by batting .298 with 12 home runs and a career-high 110 RBIs. Pafko finished fourth in the National League most valuable player balloting.

Pafko was traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers in the middle of the 1951 season in an eight-player trade and then to the Milwaukee Braves before the 1953 season.

The trade to the Braves represented somewhat of a homecoming for Pafko, a native of Boyceville, Wis. Pafko spent seven seasons with the Braves, but his best seasons were with the Cubs.

Pafko hit a career-high 36 home runs and finished second in the NL in 1950, his last full season with the Cubs. Pafko finished seventh in the NL in batting in 1947 (.312) and 1949 (.304).

Pafko was a part of championship teams with the three organizations he played for. In addition to the 1945 World Series, Pafko nearly led the Dodgers to the 1951 World Series when he hit 18 home runs and drove in 58 runs in only 84 games after his trade from the Cubs.

The Dodgers were eliminated by the New York Giants for the 1951 National League title on Bobby Thomson’s famous three-run homer that sailed over the head of Pafko in left field, but Pafko and the Dodgers reached the World Series the next year, when the Yankees defeated them in seven games.

Pafko won the World Series with the Braves over the Yankees in 1957 and he batted .333 in the 1958 rematch the Yankees won.
