Dominick's parent Safeway Inc. says it will exit the Chicago market by early next year.

There are 72 Dominick’s locations in the area.

The decision comes as Safeway reported third-quarter net income that tumbled to $65.8 million from $157 million a year ago. In the first nine months of the year, the Dominick's unit lost $13.7 million before taxes of $13.7 million.

Safeway said the move will save it $400 million to $450 million. It said it will use that money to buy back stock and invest in other growth opportunities.

Wow. My wife and a lot of her friends never liked Dominicks. They had a bad rep for high prices.

They had pretty good bagels.

They lost so many customers by being ridiculously expensive when Whole Foods came onto the scene a while back and could never recover.

I'm shocked they survived this long.

Next up, Jewel.

Really? I seem to remember hearing them come up when people would harp on Jewel for being too pricey. Apparently that's imaginary memory time.

Never a HUGE fan of Dom's anyway ... only went there when I wanted to crock pot because I wanted to have to look for every single thing and the lack of store familiarity helped that ... just always kinda felt odd being there though ... who cares.

Jewel ain't goin nowhere.

Yeah they're not gonna last long.

That'll also be the end of Osco Drugs.

Once Mariano's get a bigger foothold in this market, Jewel will be screwed.

Jewel is too expensive. Never had Dominick's in NWI that I can remember.

Have no clue what this Mariano's nonsense is .... never heard of it .... no coverage out this way, so I see no reason to be concerned about Jewel.

Dominicks in my area is spendy. Jewels, not so much. Aldi and one or two mexican corner stores are for the cost conscious shoppers.

Amazing. Hard to imagine a big chain like Safeway going elsewhere.

So you guys have 72 empty grocery stores! Huzzah! Almost as good as Walmart moving across the street.

It *does* mean bye-bye to a local name, though

We have a Mariano's by us. A really nice looking grocery store with quality butcher and cheeses but forget buying a lot of other stuff there. I still feel Jewel is the most reasonable.

I always found Dominick's to be very flexible in their Liquor Section hours for when you need bagels and scotch at 8am on a Sunday pregame.

Didn't know you two spent that much in-person quality time together.

Jewels being too expensive is a little overblown. They have some decent sales.

It's really best to shop around. Most shopping gets done @ Jewels, but sometimes I pick stuff up @ Shity Target or Walgreen's.

Mariano's has 13 stores .... Jewel has 172 stores in Illinois alone .... as I said, Jewel remains just fine.

Really sucks from the perspective that I have a few friends that have been working there for 20 years building up to be store management and will likely need to start at the bottom rung of another grocery store now. On the other hand, the place was incredibly expensive and seemed to always be the worst deli meat and cheese.

I hope this Mariano's outfit does really well ... the last thing any of us need is no competition in the grocery market.

Jewel has reduced prices on most items & they now run a weekly sale special on 6 or 8 items that are good deals, but Mrs. Scorehead & I never shop at Da Jewels or Dominicks. Our stores of choice are:

Woodmans
Aldi
Cermak Market
Costco
Sams

The biggest ripoff in groceries is Walmart & Target. Their prices are not the lowest, especially on produce.

disappointed that the Dominick's right by me (the closest store to me) is converting to a Jewel

was hoping for a Mariano's, Whole Foods....something else

but they're building a Meijer across the street, assuming that will pretty much crush Jewel anyway

I tend to use a mix of Peapod, Whole Foods, Pete's Fresh Market and Dominicks.....Dominicks' being like 5 minutes from my house and the closest place, i did go there a lot just out of convenience

but they sucked really bad. the prices aren't such a big deal, if you used their online thing and bought sale stuff it was more than fine, but the quality of the food was very poor. the produced sucks.....go into Pete's and look at the tubs of strawberries then go to Dominck's they're all dark and about to rot. several times i'd buy stuff like yogurt and not bother to check the expiration date and later notice it was expiring in like 2 days. their meat department sucked. just not good product there

Fuck Dominicks really. I feel bad that in this economy that so many people will be looking for jobs but they only have themselves to blame. Far and away the hardest of the grocery stores to deal with. They would call in to upper management every single day to complain about one thing or the next. They act like they are the most important store in the marketplace and they probably have the lowest share. Biggest pain in the ass to deal with.
