I didn't say I'd do that. The girls came to me.

No, I just told the ladies to shut up and blow me.

Just kidding. I never told them to shut up.

Really? Terry's "Cub Guy" was Dave Van Dyck, a guy who was already being paid to publish info in the Tribune and--paid to give "inside info" on The Score. Wow, that's some inside source there, Mr. Boers, you worthless d'bag.

So is this Bernstein's own "Wade to the Bulls is imminent" moment that will love on in 670 infamy, or was Goff's misstep more egregious? I don't remember what happened during Goff's moment, but this one was pretty bad.

I think Goff just popped off on Twitter whereas this was over the air. However, like we've been saying, he didn't really get it wrong, because he said it might have been a negotiation ploy anyway, which makes it not even a scoop in the first place.

Did he hedge early on, as in when he first "reported" it? I seem to remember him saying this was a done deal, and there are no other candidates even though reports will say other candidates exist, and this is all pretty much wrapped up. Did he include the negotiation ploy angle early on, or was that much later?

The line Dan shouldn't get to live down is the intimation that Theo and Rahm would make backroom deals at their synagogue. Spiegel was offended.

As being part of the nature of the business, it is understandable and to an extent acceptable to put out rumors from anonymous sources who have a modicum of legitimacy. In a sense, it is how WSCR was able to carve out their niche and reshape the Chicago sports talk landscape. In the early years, back when they had real experts who gave sober and extremely measured opinion, and certain newspaper columnists spitballed on an almost daily basis, it only helped that the radio hosts knew people in the various organizations or had relationships that would allow them to hear things that may not be suitable for print but could be intimated verbally.

Terry had his sources, Mac knew some people who toured the late night circuit, and even Bernstein himself has talked of how Wannstedt used to call him into his office, let him sit on his knee, and talk to him as more than just a reporter. Over the years they've had a few hits but lately the misses are more common. Its what gives this board some value, noting the misses.

Lately though, it seems that the misses aren't just more frequent but bigger as well. Super well-placed anonymous sources with specious credentials, Dan trying to talk as if its only a matter of "when" and not "if." The refusal to entertain anyone who challenges his rumors (particularly on the website), the automatic dismissal of anyone questioning him on-air, and of course, the inevitable back-tracking as though the wrong outcome wasn't just always likely but probable.

He's got 25 hours to fill, a co-host who is more often than not absent both physically and mentally, and its his microphone and his show, so the only dissent will be read in this particular forum. Thus he can be the smartest person in the room and the only person in the room, and when challenged his ALS can be summoned in 140 characters or less.

Good points. Mac, Terry and whomever from the old days sources have dried up. They have not cultivated new people that used to be on the inside to take the rumor helm.

You think Mitch questions Bernstein on this shit? He should. He doesn't. Bernstein runs the Score. Everybody there answers to him. Including Mitch.

That's a big issue I have with bernstein. He's only a "reporter" when he wants to be. When he puts on his reporter hat, he becomes an "expert" ready to shout down anyone who disagrees with him while authoritatively citing confidential sources and referencing murky events that he knows about and you do not and which he cannot mention on the air. When he is proven to be wrong, it's always "why do you care?" and "we're not reporters, we're talk show hosts." (Usually followed by Terry: "Uh, eh, eh, yeah, we're idiots".) Listen for entertainment purposes only and don't put any stock in any of their "scoops" would be my advice.

But the explosion of social media has changed things a lot more than dan bernstein can. Twitter has allowed erstwhile legitimate reporters a looser forum to post rumor and innuendo without the same standards that had been demanded of them in their old media platforms. There are old school guys posting shit on Twitter that they would never consider submitting to an editor. And it's gotten some people fired or demoted. There is twice as much information available as there once was and half of it is bad.

I don't know if it was literal or not, I mean who knows if these guys even attend at all, let alone the same place, but he was dead serious about the idea that two Jewish guys were going to put their heads together to get shit done.

IIRC he came on the air and said it.

He absolutely said something about Theo needing to "join the right Synagogue" and was serious when he did.

Goff said it on air also. He said his sources said the Bulls had Lebron and Wade both coming to the Bulls. He ran with it for a few days, just like like Little Danny.

No he didn't.

He tweeted that "sources were saying that Wade and Bosh were coming" but that "he didn't believe it."

If you want to criticize, at least get it right.

He did say Lebron and Wade. I think he went on Mac's show or it was a fill-in show. He was on as a guest. It was around a holiday, 4th of July I think, so there was lots of garbage shows on at the time.

Dan's the same guy who, when any dumb caller argument devolves to the caller pointing out he grew up on the North Shore, will flip his shit and start screaming "WHY DON'T YOU SAY WHAT YOU REALLY MEAN." If he's that sensitive to potential dog-whistling, maybe he ought not to start bragging about how the Jewish guys are going to get together in their Jewish place of worship and make secret Jewish business deals because they're Jewish, which is orders of magnitude more overt and offensive than just saying someone from Deerfield may lack certain perspectives or life experiences. I found it really disrespectful and irresponsible. Why ever give anyone the ammunition to make an accusation that gross?

you know, it's pretty sad to hear terry mailing it in as much as he does these days, but can you really blame him? dan's obviously driving the show, he's got VERY. IMPORTANT. CAUSES. such as taking that bold stance against child rape, and he's essentially the kind of opinionated bigot he often rails against when he's reading the caller/s their crime of disagreeing with him.

webster's dictionary wrote:
bigot. 1. having or revealing an obstinate belief in the superiority of one's own opinions and a prejudiced intolerance of the opinions of others.

so yeah, i can't blame terry for kicking back and rubberstamping everything dan says ad infinitum. dan's a FOTS on a mission and terry's chill with being the comedy sidekick along from the ride. he's got a sweet gig with the part time ISDN line going on, and quite honestly he's the reason that i'm still listening to the show 'lo these many years. I hope that when i'm his age i'm even half as cool of an old/school dude, let alone having an awesome job like he does.
