Well that makes two idiots. Pure and simple, once again: Bartman interfered with an out being made which led to the Cubs SS botching a grounder because he was trying to turn two instead of one. It's that simple, even for the simple minded. So maybe even a "Darkside" might understand.

The ball was in the stands.
The SS botched the play because he sucks not because of the play before it.
Bartman was on of like 7 people reaching for that ball.

You want to blame someone, blame Alou for acting like a petulant child.

Yeah,he almost got Bartman killed that night. I agree. All I'm saying is if Alou catches that ball, that made the 2nd out. The SS then isn't rushing in on a weak grounder. He just has to throw to first.

I'm pretty sure there aren't any geniuses in this CSFMB thread. Just people that have better thoughts, perspective, and overall clarity.

The funniest thing is that so many Cub fans assume that the decidedly mediocre corner outfielder Moises Alou was absolutely going to make what would have been a spectacular catch.

JORR,
A special I saw removed all the fans hands with computer trickery. It showed the ball heading right into the glove.

I do believe he would have made the catch. The only way I'd see the footage more is if Oliver Stone made the movie we know needs to be made.

It was really shocking to see him chasing down the ball in the first place, truth be told.

I've seen it over a hundred times myself and I don't think there's any way in hell he makes that catch. I guess we'll never know.

Drop In,
Do you think the Cubs SS bobbles the ball if there are 2 outs and he's not rushing to turn two? That is all I'm saying. One wrong move by a fan turned in to misplays by the Cub SS which opened the floodgates because Prior lost his concentration.

The catch wasn't made. Fans, like umpires, or walls or bases or pitching rubbers, they get in the way of what "would have happened". Did you see Cutler peg the ref a couple weeks ago?
Fact is the fans, the umps, the bases the refs...they're all part of the field, the game. You have to work thru it like you'd have to work thru wind or rain or whatever.

Bartman only did what all of us would have done in that scenario.

JORR,

Was this the ESPN special, "Catching Hell"? If it was, the results were truly inconclusive. Also, Bartman's hand wasn't really the one that got in the way...it was the guy they interviewed that was a row behind him. Also, he is the guy you see talking to security and blocking Bartman from the camera briefly on the video.

Bartman didn't do anything any other reasonable fan wouldn't have done. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He's a patsy for a fandom lacking a championship for so long, they still believe they're cursed by a fucking goat. Also, Boston and the White Sox winning the next 2 series really didn't help their desperation.

Time to put away the pitchforks on this one. If there's truly a scapegoat, it is Dusty Baker who didn't walk out there (or send his minion, Larry Rothschild) to calm down his prima donna pitcher (who had already thrown too many pitches and was completely gassed).

There is no way of knowing. No way at all.
There's no room for "What if" in life... or sports.

I agree. Despite my terrible thread title (I knew it would prompt a negative reaction),I do feel bad for the guy. I already forgot who the Cubs had in the bullpen that year. Was it that guy,Joe Bowrowski?

I think that was in "Catching Hell" the ESPN 30 for 30 series. Alou was there. I wouldn't assume he'd make a spectacular catch, but as a Cub fan that's seen that replay a billion times, it didn't require a spectacular one.

BOTTOM LINE: Florida had better pitching and more clutch hitting. They won, move on. Just another Cub heartbreak.

This.

It's a very interesting example of how sports can sometimes bring out the worst in people.

You started a "10 years later,Bartman is still an asshole!" thread. Actually, it's this thread.

As stated,I still feel he was part of what happened that night but it was 10 years ago. I'm sure the Cubs will find a new way to disapoint me.

Jimmy...you're my guy & all...but your thoughts on Steve Bartman are wrong. This poor guy was vilified for doing what any fan would have done. He had nothing to do with the Cubs losing. No runs scored on the Bartman play. Here is a guy who could have cashed in on this unfortunate situation & made a lot of money from this, but he declined all offers. All he wanted was to live a normal life without stupid Cubs fans going after him.
Let it go.
