Why Don't The St. Louis Cardinals Respect The Game?

Image

After last night's loss to the Dodgers in Game 3 of the NLCS, a few Cardinals players expressed dismay at some of the exuberance that was displayed by a few Dodgers players. "Mickey Mouse stuff," one called it. We at Deadspin share the Cardinals' concern for the soul of baseball. We want to see the game played the right way, which is why we'd like to see the following behavior eradicated from the diamond.

Here's Michael Wacha showing up Juan Uribe after striking him out to escape a bases loaded jam in Game 2. Wacha's just 22, so we blame his veteran teammates for not getting in his ear and letting him know that such behavior is unacceptable:

Why Don't The St. Louis Cardinals Respect The Game?
Trevor Rosenthal wasn't shy about letting his emotions fly after ending Game 2 with a strikeout. Yet another example of a young kid who needs to learn how to conduct himself on the diamond:

Why Don't The St. Louis Cardinals Respect The Game?
Here's Matt Carpenter leading off Game 2 with a triple before letting everyone in the stadium know who The Man is. It's just the first inning, Matt. There's still a lot of hardball to be played:
Image

Hey Carlos Martinez, two claps is plenty. That's something that his American teammates will hopefully be able to teach this young gun:

Why Don't The St. Louis Cardinals Respect The Game?
Has David Freese ever crossed home plate before? This isn't the NBA, buddy:
Image

Why Don't The St. Louis Cardinals Respect The Game?
Carlos Beltran is one of the best postseason hitters in history. Too bad talent doesn't always come with an equal measure of class:

Why Don't The St. Louis Cardinals Respect The Game?
It just makes you sick, doesn't it?

If the plucky, swaggering Cardinals really want to learn how to act like professionals, they'd be wise to look across the diamond, at grizzled veterans like Michael Young and Mark Ellis. Young and Ellis may be too old and too far past their primes to send the Cards packing, but they'll hopefully be able to send them off with a lesson on how the game should be played.

You can do this for any team.

I don't really think batflips and all of that are necessary, but I don't really care about it that much.

I didn't see what the Dodgers did. Was it anything worse than above? I don't really seen an issue with any of the gifs you posted there to be honest. If the Dodgers did pretty much the same thing, then shame on the Cardinals for getting butthurt over nothing.

Gonzalez pointed into the dugout and Puig threw both arms in the air.

Both acts already done by the Cards in this very series. Including Beltran, who specifically called out Puig

This really is no worse than what most other teams do. The difference is that the Cardinals were vocal about what the Dodgers supposedly did.

To answer the above question, I don't think it was any worse.

You're in the minority. My roommates were vocally upset when Pirates fans booed Cardinals players who approached the plate. "That's not how it's done. We're classier in St. Louis than that." This Dodger shit was just another notch on the belt.

They should have a team McNugget eating competition, and settle this once and for all.

Excellent stuff.

I have had several Cardinal fans mention to me how they did not like what Puig did after his hit.

Somehow they always fail to see it when their own players do it.

Your roommates are probably annoying fans who buy into whatever narrative gets pushed by the media particular to whichever franchise they follow. Every team has them.

The main thing about the stuff that seems to get dumped on Puig is the racial overtones. I don't agree with that. I found it amazing after all of that, he still is fast enough to make it to third base.

Gibson used to throw at guys all the time, he was a pretty big guy. It's a different game now. I'm not really an advocate of throwing at people intentionally. McGwire used to stand at home plate after his homers for like 10 seconds, never really liked that either.

Brian McCann is at it again. If Brian McCann doesn't like the way the Dodgers are celebrating then Brian McCann should stop them from getting hits and scoring runs. Brian McCann is not the protector of baseball. Brian McCann didn't write the unwritten rules of baseball. Brian McCann should just shut up and play the game. Brian McCann.

This is what Wainwright actually said... dude is pretty chill. I don't think he was even upset really.

NARRATIVE.

Nor should he be upset. If he were, dont let Puig and Gonzales get hits off you and you wont see a celebration

"As a player, I just think he doesn't know [how to act]," Beltran said. "That's what I think. He really doesn't know. He must think that he's still playing somewhere else.

"He has a lot of passion, no doubt about that -- great ability, great talent. I think with time he'll learn that you've got to act with a little bit more calm."

I dont know what you could possibly be arguing.

I mean, yes, I love it because it's the Cardinals, but its pretty evident they're full of shit.

Beltran criticized Puig for doing something several members of the Cardinals have done in the last three games, including himself.

There really is no argument here.

They're hypocritical. Its no big deal. Its just kinda funny how it all played out.

Heard there's a whole row of seats exclusively reserved for their sanctimony at home games.

Baseball is supposed to be played by boring white grinders only like David Eckstein, Nick Punto and Brian McCann.

Exactly. I have no problem with any of them.

Just don't call out the other team for things your own team is doing just as much.

Beltran's quote is pretty much the exact response half of Puig's own dugout has.

i.e. “He’s young and doesn’t really know what he’s doing yet”. Maybe Beltran should have just let it lie, but it's essentially the same thing that Carl said when being pointedly asked about it.

Media: What do you think about Puig batflipping a 350 foot fly ball in the 4th inning?
Beltran: I don’t really think it was good but he’s young so whatever
Media: HOLY SHIT SHOTS FIRED. NEW LEAD STORY: CARDINALS HATE FUN

This whole thing is so hilariously stupid. Deadspin loves this because of assbag posts by Leitch (which, if it isn't clear; I think are awful) while also being food for people that hate the Cardinal. this generates heaploads of clicks and responses, and thus more posts. The folks calling out the “respect the game” crowd have become as insufferable as the “respect the game” crowd. I suppose it’s inevitable in the internet instant analysis world that this would happen.

And RPB, I'm not arguing anything. It seems you were looking for one with the title, but I'm sure you are aware of that.

Meanwhile, instead of knocking the meathead #bfib off their high horse, the horse simply gains stilts.

Wainwright's comment was in reference to Gonzalez yelling things at him from third base while he was doing his windup, which to me is certainly more annoying than a batflip.

He did hear Gonzalez in that same inning talking to him from third base as he tried to make pitches. Gonzalez was essentially heckling the righty as he went into his delivery. Wainwright called it Gonzalez’s “Mickey Mouse stuff” on third base. Gonzalez turned the question into a Southern California joke.

“Mickey Mouse is only an hour away. It fits us,” he said.

I guess if it's about Puig though, it's better copy
