For fear of having Family Guy label me one of "those guys", I offer another show to go with The Wire, Breaking Bad and Sopranos. I would have loved to see Deadwood have the opportunity to go 4 - 6 years. Great show snipped before its time. Wasn't ever gonna be best ever, but it could have been in the team photo.

I haven't seen the latest season of Mad Men. I am a bigfan, but don't place it in the pantheon of greatest shows.

Only people I've met IRL who liked it were chicks. Figured it was a One Tree Hill prime-time soap opera.

However, the Grantland guys put it up there among Wire/Breaking Bad/Mad Men/Sopranos.

I was going to mention Friday Night Lights but it fizzled toward the end as well when the original cast of characters had moved on. But, if they had structured it as a 3-4 year show with just those original characters of Riggins and Street and the new QB and the babes it would have a been a solid drama contender.

Yes, and Donnie Murphy = Robinson Cano.

Okay.

Dollars for value. I said that in my post about THAT! Did you ever watch Crime Story?

This thread has reinforced my belief that Sopranos is the most overrated show in tv history. It was good for a couple seasons and then it went to crap. Every season was boring for about 8 episodes and then there would be an episode when a bunch of people got whacked. Rinse and repeat for several seasons and you had a boring, horrible tv show. Hated it and was glad to see that crap go out with the whimper it deserved.

I saw Deadwood mentioned as well. You've got to be joking? First season was AMAZING. Second season was pretty good. Third season was god awful. You know a show sucks when the creators promise to make a 2 hour movie to make up for the shit ending they gave it...and of course the movie never happened.

Just finally finished the 2nd season of BB on Netflix yesterday.
To say I'm hooked would be putting it mildly.
Looking forward to starting season 3 tonight when my wife gets home.

BB was great. Too many annoying characters for me to consider it the best show. Marie, Skyler, Flynn, and Hank were all lame. So were Jesse's girlfriends and Lydia. The Neo-Nazis were basic totally pure evil baddies. Cranston, Odenkirk, and at times Paul were the only reason to watch. I know people love Gus but I never thought of him as that well-written of a character. Just an unfeeling robot mastermind. But his death scene was epic. Mike was good and his speech to Walt before Walt shot him is awesome. Bryan Cranston was superb. The range of acting he demonstrates and his transformation were a real special thing to watch. Love when he pulls his Walt lying manipulative bullshit on his family or Jesse.

The Sopranos went on too long. It was at its best in seasons 2-3, minus the Jackie Jr shit.

I like The Wire. I just didn't buy the McNulty fake serial killer shit. That lowered the greatness of the show but I'd still say it is the best tv show I have watched.

Sons of Anarchy went south during that Ireland season. It's getting better this season. I had given up on it but I like what I see so far this year.

Dexter has stunk since the Trinity season.

Carnivale was a nice show on HBO that went to glue factory too soon. Slow-moving but it had an interesting mythology and characters.

Hopkins weighs in for those that didn't see it...

Anthony Hopkins says Bryan Cranston's acting in 'Breaking Bad' is the best he's ever seen
Anthony Hopkins wasn't a Breaking Bad fan until just a few weeks ago, but after a marathon session bringing him from episode one through the series' conclusion, he's become simply stunned by it. "Your performance as Walter White was the best acting I have seen — ever," Hopkins allegedly writes in an email to Bryan Cranston, which was published yesterday by actor Steven Michael Quezada, who played Hank's partner, Steven Gomez. "This work of yours is spectacular — absolutely stunning," Hopkins writes.

The compliment should mean something coming from Hopkins, who is widely considered to be among the finest actors around. While Hopkins begins by commending Cranston alone, he continues to express his love of the entire series and its full cast. "What is extraordinary, is the sheer power of everyone in the entire production," Hopkins writes. "It was like a great Jacobean, Shakespearian, or Greek Tragedy." While the cast probably appreciated Hopkins letter, it only serves to underscore how disappointed fans may be to finally let it go. "That kind of work / artistry is rare," Hopkins writes, "and when, once in a while, it occurs, as in this epic work, it restores confidence."

Update: After receiving wider attention today, it appears that Quezada has pulled the Facebook post that he published the letter in. The full text of the letter — as recovered by commenter Mo.hit — is now quoted below.

Dear Mister Cranston.

I wanted to write you this email – so I am contacting you through Jeremy Barber – I take it we are both represented by UTA . Great agency.

I’ve just finished a marathon of watching "BREAKING BAD" – from episode one of the First Season – to the last eight episodes of the Sixth Season. (I downloaded the last season on AMAZON) A total of two weeks (addictive) viewing.

I have never watched anything like it. Brilliant!

Your performance as Walter White was the best acting I have seen – ever.

I know there is so much smoke blowing and sickening bullshit in this business, and I’ve sort of lost belief in anything really.

But this work of yours is spectacular – absolutely stunning. What is extraordinary, is the sheer power of everyone in the entire production. What was it? Five or six years in the making? How the producers (yourself being one of them), the writers, directors, cinematographers…. every department – casting etc. managed to keep the discipline and control from beginning to the end is (that over used word) awesome.

From what started as a black comedy, descended into a labyrinth of blood, destruction and hell. It was like a great Jacobean, Shakespearian or Greek Tragedy.

If you ever get a chance to – would you pass on my admiration to everyone – Anna Gunn, Dean Norris, Aaron Paul, Betsy Brandt, R.J. Mitte, Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Steven Michael Quezada – everyone – everyone gave master classes of performance … The list is endless.

Thank you. That kind of work/artistry is rare, and when, once in a while, it occurs, as in this epic work, it restores confidence.

You and all the cast are the best actors I’ve ever seen.

That may sound like a good lung full of smoke blowing. But it is not. It’s almost midnight out here in Malibu, and I felt compelled to write this email.

Congratulations and my deepest respect. You are truly a great, great actor.

Best regards

Tony Hopkins.

I'll go back and read the thread, but the short, simple answer is no. The Wire is.

IMO, it's neck and neck. Breaking Bad is only slightly better because it's more current

I understand that opinion. I don't think there is really a wrong answer, except for jimmypasta's. I just don't think I'll be changing my opinion on it although I do intend to watch BB again. It's Wire, BB, Sopranos for my top 3.

As I said I am really enjoying this series.

But did they really waste an entire episode on chasing a fly around?

That's a top 10 episode. An important one too for Walt.

I just finished up through season 5 part 1. And that is all that is on Netflix.

Is season 5 part 2 available anywhere?

ok well i'm not going to be bothered enough to read the thread, but i can tell you emphatically and definitively "NO".... i mean jesus horatio christ impaled on tom cruise's majestic cum excalibur for the love of [insert something deity-esque here for the necessary poignancy] breaking bad the best show ever? what?

skip bayless famously called this thing being a "prisoner of the moment" and that's what you're suffering with here. good god man, go pick up the max headroom DVDs and go watch the real greatest show in the history of american/television. thank you drive through.

At this point you'd still have to pay for it (iTunes).
