That's the point that gets lost in this too. If the stadium was empty, Alou still probably doesnt make that catch. He threw a fit so that the media and fans could have someone to blame for him not making the catch.

I dunno, like I said, he was in position to catch it. He was still moving so it wouldn't have been easy, but it wasn't like he had no shot. Nobody was going to blame him for not catching it because Bartman made it impossible for him. It's not like Bartman covered up Alou blowing it and Alou saw his chance to deflect blame. Maybe he shouldn't have thrown a fit, but Bartman absolutely cost him the opportunity to catch it.

I don't blame Bartman either. But this is the point that has always bothered me. You have to know the situation there and stay back and at least give him a shot at catching the ball.

Why not blame the owners then for crowding the fans into every crevice possible including right ONTO the playing field?

Does anyone really have any interest in watching the CSN "5 Outs" special? Who would want to relive this nightmare? I'll never forget this night. It was by far the worse night of my sports fan life, as I'm sure it was for most other Cubs fans.
Now...back to trying to forget that this happened...

What else compares to it?

We have the Hawks losing to Montreal in the Cup Finals but that was 100 years ago.
The Bears losing to the Colts in the SB? Nah.

I can't think of anything except the loss to the Padres in '84.

Alou wasnt going to make the catch for sure, he probably wasnt going to even if Bartman boxed out the entire section and gave him a clear run at it. Even so, Bartman is a SPECTATOR. The onus should be on the waste of space Gonzalez. He is the reason shit blew up that inning. The heirarchy of blame for that implosion is

1:Gonzalez-- Stupid fucking jackass
2:Alou-- Shouldn't have flipped his shit
3:Dusty--After Alou had flipped his shit he shoudl have went out to the mound and brought the infield in and gave them a little breather to calm down and reassure them that everything was supercool.

Dont forget Prior. He was pointing and freaking out too and he was supposed to be the robot who wouldnt be affected by such things. (Even though he DID throw what should have been an inning ending dp)

He just took his cue from Alou. If Alou hadn't gone through all those histrionics, I believe Prior wouldn't have thought twice about it and would have just gone back and got the batter. Shit like that happens all the time and you don't even hear about it. Just play ball. If Alou doesn't stomp his feet like a baby, we probably aren't even talking about this.

In fact, it happened just the other night to Prince Fielder.

Go ahead and deny it, but it is pretty apparent that Cub fans revel in being lovable losers. It is their identity similar to the Red Sox before Theo used another GMs work to lead them to a World Series. Remember all those overwrought pieces about The Curse of the Babe featuring guys like Dennis Leary? There was a void when they finally won and the Cubs happily filled it.

Your own example undermines your premise

Do Red Sox fans seem like they miss the losing days?

I do think they've lost their identity to a degree. For years it was a badge of honor, a test of character to be a Red Sox fan. You can laugh at that. After all, it's really just entertainment. But that was the mythology anyway. There were books written about it. Movies made about it. People reveled in it. It defined who they were. Always agonizingly close but never quite there. And now that's been lost. They're just boorish and obnoxious fans who mistakenly think their shitrat team is suddenly somehow the equal of the Yankees.

In a different way. They're not special anymore. Now they're just another team that isn't as good as the Yankees.

take a look at any serious red sox fan message board and notice the inevitable discussion about pink hat wearers. Winning came with a price it seems like some would have rather not payed. It is similar to Blackhawks fans after the first cup.

Havent run into 1 single solitary Blackhawks fan who regrets them winning the Cup and wants to go back to the good old days when they were bad.

So I see why a Reds fan would notice it.

After watching the show, I still don't get why Sosa can't be welcomed back into the fold. He roided up like many others. But he did genuinely want the Cubs to win it all, and you could argue he did more to make it happen than any other player the last 105 years. And he still seems to have a good attitude about everything.

Whatever.

If he wasn't such a fraud and a douche I'm sure he would be welcomed back by now. Perhaps if he owns up to some of his mistakes people will welcome him back with open arms.

He's more likable than most of the 2003 team. He always played hard for the Cubs, if the fans wanted more from him that's their loss. 3 60+ homer seasons, led the league in Runs and total bases 3 times and RBIs 2 times, and MVP of 98 where the Cubs would have been dead without him. He was their best player by a country mile, fuck fans that wouldn't welcome him back.

I never considered the 2003 team to be unlikeable, which is weird because many of the same guys made up the Extremely unlikeable 04 team

Although they added Todd Walker, LaTroy Hawkins, Kent Mercker, and Derrek Lee

That's because those fans don't exist. If you talk to any of those dopes they would probably be shocked to find that the team existed before 2008.

But it would be a pretty silly argument since it didn't happen.
