His baseball numbers are other worldly, steroids or not. He busted his 'roided ass for the Cubs even though he could never hit the cutoff man in the outfield. For once on this board I really don't have a strong opinion on this subject.

What do you guys think?

* The Cubs should welcome him back for a "day"

* Put up a statue in the new hotel next to the public restrooms.

* he is an a_hole,ignore him.

I'm kind of torn on the subject of all those guys. What happened happened and it's a part of baseball history. Are we really going to just ignore all the great players from a 25 year period (except those who the media have arbitrarily decided to declare "clean")?

But there's no doubt that Sammy is a turd and there are many guys who never put up his numbers who were far better players. It's all fucked up. This guy running around talking about how he and Mark "saved" baseball. In fact, they nearly destroyed it. Fuck Sammy Sosa.

The very idea that baseball needed "saving" is preposterous and offensive. It's the greatest game. It doesn't require trickery or nonsense. But it isn't a game for littlebrains. If you need constant stimuli, there's the NBA. Basball is the Dodgers and the Cardinals playing 1-0 and 3-2 games in October. If you find that "boring", you don't like baseball. Go watch Jay Cutler throw another interception.

My point was more that Selig juiced the balls, but I agree with what you said there.

Oh, I believe that. I also believe he put them back to "normal". And that PED usage hasn't really diminished much. But he may get credit for "cleaning things up".

What's the "stimuli" that characterizes the NBA?

On a different subject, I do not understand the talk about forgiving or including proven MLB cheaters in the record books, etc. I thought it was very simple: you cheated, therefore your history is necessarily tainted. What is the other side of the debate?

Cubbie Nation does not forgive and Cubbie Nation does not forget.

It amazes me how many former players and managers are extremely disliked or hated. Even a fan has been put on the enemy list. It seems like a higher list than most other teams.

Well, it's still baseball. But you're pretty much the right age where nearly all the baseball you ever saw was that hyper-offensive style. And guys a little younger than you never saw what might be called "normal" baseball until the last couple seasons. I imagine it was similar to growing up in the 30s.

And when offensive production was wildly high and at the same time people were analyzing the numbers like never before, many ideas were based on the average numbers of that time. For example, giving outs away with bunts in a game where 10 or 12 runs are likely to be scores is foolish. It makes much more sense in a context where the final score may well be 2-1 or 1-0.

To me, a balanced game is a better game. If every dope can hit the ball 400 feet, who is special for doing it? And you've removed or decreased the value of components that are traditionally important like running and bunting, and even fielding to a large degree.

Bartman
Lou
Dusty
Sammy
Prior
Soriano(I know he isn't a former player yet)
Zambrano
Ryan Dempster
Milton Bradley
Carlos Marmol(deserved towards the end though)

Those are the major ones, thought it feels like I'm forgetting someone.
You probably could add Quade, McFail(if you include GM's), Alou, and many of the failed prospects like Pie, Hawkins, and Patterson if you wanted to.

There is never a moment when something isn't blaring or moving. If you and a fellow basketball aficionado want to take a minute during a timeout to discuss all the stuff Thibs is running, good luck hearing each other and don't get hit in the head with a radio-controlled blimp.

Well, I think it's a little more complex than that. You pretty much had the whole league "cheating" with the tacit approval of the authorities.

I'm not one to argue for the "beauty" or "purity" or whatever of NBA basketball; the league has altered the rules over the last 15 years or so to clearly showcase its most marketable stars. But criticizing basketball for all the on-court movement seems trivial when the whole game is based off constant movement. If you just meant the theatrics in the stands during timeouts, then I don't get how that constitutes any sort of stimuli that's essential to the game. Radio controlled blimps don't sound all that different from men and woman racing around a baseball diamond dressed as massive sausages, or listening to some drunk celebrity serenade everyone with a botched-up rendering of take me out to the ballgame.

I could do without that stuff too. There's no doubt that baseball has taken some cues from The NBA on how to "entertain" fans. It's an overall dumbing down of the sports fan. And society in general. I'm not criticizing others. I can hardly stand in one spot with my own thoughts before pulling out my phone and fucking around with it.

I can fly from here to LA doing nothing but staring at the seat in front of me. Compared to that baseball is exciting.

Id cut that list by about half but you have a point.

Definitely take Lou off. I dont see any hate for him.

And to me people dont have much hate for Zambrano and the Prior/Dempster ones are borderline.

Oh and Milton Bradley doesnt count for obvious reasons.

I actually have no hate for anyone on that list.

My perceived public, um, perceptions:

Bartman - maybe at first, but seems to have been largely forgiven
Lou - was supposed to right the ship after Dusty; instead presided over disastrous playoff performances
Dusty - One flash in the pan, presided over colossal choke job, then spearheaded the "us against the world" vibe; lost the "warm-and-fuzzy", dude.
Sammy - even without the roids, corked bat incident and leaving the clubhouse in the middle of the game did not leave a good taste at the end of his run.
Prior - was going to be that generation's Koufax, but turned out to be a head (and roid?) case in short order
Soriano(I know he isn't a former player yet) - hottest free agent available that never lived up to expectations (read: $$$); loafer
Zambrano - extreme head case; Cub's very own Nuke LaLoosh
Ryan Dempster - was fine until the "Atlanta trade deadline nix" incident; otherwise, I don't think Cubbie Nation ever disliked him.
Milton Bradley - duh. Hendry's finest moment.
Carlos Marmol(deserved towards the end though) - yeah, maybe I can see that one

Those are the major ones, thought it feels like I'm forgetting someone.
You probably could add Quade, McFail(if you include GM's), Alou, and many of the failed prospects like Pie, Hawkins, and Patterson if you wanted to.

It doesn't really amaze me. On that list - I mean, maybe "hate" is too strong a word in most cases, but "extreme disappointment" is a fairly common denominator. Keep in mind, though, the OTT LOVE that guys like Jenkins, Wood, Williams, Santo, et al still receive, having pretty much accomplished the same, or less, on Cubs teams as those on the "enemies" list.
