Jorr it kind of is. I go back to the book Coming Apart. The author uses the infiltration of previously lower class activities (tattoos was one example) into main stream life and middle class values. He argues that the country is adopting the habits of the lower class- out of wedlock births, lower church attendance, high divorce rates, etc. He has all the data tables and charts to back this up. I never really thought about it much. A year ago in Vegas, I was at the pool and noticed at least 80% of the patrons had tattoos, regular middle aged folks. Now there's nothing wrong with that. I just said, oh he was right.

Here's the rub from the book- the vast majority of the truly successful Americans, top 5%, have almost none of the attributes of this so-called new middle class. The data amazed me.

Without having read the book, that "data set" sounds awfully subjective and biased. Middle/low class "values" is a worthless category/term since it assumes distinct binaries between economically differentiated groups of people, for whom they may or may not share fondness for particular cultural or counter-cultural trends. There's a whole lot of fluidity when it comes to culture and aesthetics that cannot be neatly pinned down into "classes" as the author presumes. The truth is that agnosticism, divorce rates, etc., are representative all across the societal board.

Vegan, the book is interesting. First it strips race out of the equation because it only uses whites to prevent issues with the changes in demographics from 1960 until today. It then uses objective data on things like divorce rates, out of wedlock births, and incomes.

It compares the top 5% to how it looked in 1960. Amazingly, on most metrics, the top 5% look largely the same.

Then it looks at other slices of income. Unfortunately, the middle classes have converged with the poor.


Now we can argue about if divorces and single parent households are good or bad or to what degree.

His reasoning as to why is also interesting. A few key things- mobility is higher with interstate highways and automobiles, and the better off self segregate by location. Top universities became much more selective based roughly around IQ's. Since most educated people meet their spouses in college, more high IQ people were having offspring together. When that happens, they are much more likely to have high IQ offspring. And so on.

These factors have led to the separation and outperformance of the top class to the detriment of everyone else. If youre interested, it is a must read.
