Does the Cardinals making the world series with so many young players further alter the Cub schedule for contending?

It depends what Theo and Co consider contending. If being over .500 is considered contending then no it doesn't matter but if contending is finishing within 5 games of first place then St Louis and Pittsburgh pose big problems to the contending timeline.

I think the Red is going to start waning, but PIT doesn't appear to be going anywhere. Still, as this year has demonstrated, finishing 3rd can still get you the WC
