His take is all over the place:

Quote:
I don’t like being lectured by sportscasters about ethnic sensitivity. Or advised by the president of the United States about changing team names. Or blackmailed by tribal leaders playing the race card.

Then he says:

Quote:
And here’s the key point: You would stop not because of the language police. Not because you might incur a Bob Costas harangue. Not because the president would wag a finger. But simply because the word was tainted, freighted with negative connotations with which you would not want to be associated.

Isn't part of the reason words evolve a direct result of "public scolds" telling people: 'Hey maybe we shouldn't use this word because it denigrates an entire race of people.'? And isn't his column the exact kind of public scolding he rails against? What gives Chuck?

I think you're misunderstanding his viewpoint. Somehow many people have come to accept some ridiculous idea that "if it offends one person it shouldn't be said or done". If we were really to adopt such a philosophy, communication would be impossible. I'm offended every time I leave my house. As a matter of fact, you've offended me just now. So what? I'll get over it. The point is that we shouldn't be using words that serve no purpose other than to denigrate others. It matters not if anyone takes offense to those words or not.

What is the "oh, man " comment after the Norm MacDonald soundbite. Please tell me these two don't dislike him too.

Today contained maybe the best summation of late-period B&B: they went on some rant about how conservatives need to stop demonizing minorities and gays (not poors, though, lol) if they ever want to reclaim the presidency, not to mention the national moral high ground. Seconds—seconds—later, they shifted to a discussion of cheerleaders, and Dan tittered "I have no problem whatsoever objectifying the female form."

I really don't give a crap about Illiniwek but it does give them a chance to go anti rube. Also, whoever said it above Dan is a limo liberal. He is all in on all the fashionable trends as far as thoughts go. I do not yet really know if he believes all of it but it makes good radio, to him. Terry is a more funny thing. My recollection dac when he was with Mac and maybe the early B&B years was that he wasn't necessarily a right winger but was pretty conservative in general. Nascar, country music and telling people how things should be. Hell JD Spangler was his buddy and they make fun of rednecks now.

All of that is tolerable to me but I have about hit my limit with one thing Dan overuses no abuses. I can take all the landmark, in space and so on but every time he uses "replacement level" I want to scream. He now is using it in football and it is just wrong. Stop.

Dan's got an established track record of ambivalence regarding the fairer sex. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Dan is essentially a baseline Redditor.

I was in the car for most of the afternoon today driving home from Indy, & being the radio channel hopper that I am, I tuned in to 670 at least a dozen times today & every time I did B&B were ranting about Indian sports names & mascots, & ethnic sensitivity. This went on for hours. I tune in...I tune out. Tomorrow more gay talk. The next day more concussion talk. It is all so old & stale. Mitch would be wise to make these guys have pre show meetings & actually prepare for their show.

One of the main things I came away from yesterday's show with was the fact that bernstein doesn't not mind players becoming brain damaged in football as long as the damage is the result of good, clean hits.

it's been more than that. Football players necessarily need to become brain damaged so Bernstein can be sure to enjoy his Sundays. Oh and those players cannot be his kids, or the kids of anyone he knows and likes. This isn't hyperbole.

It is a little strange given how big of a deal he made out of CTE but I don't think that is a crazy stance. That is kind of how I look at it.

I actually think that is a reasonable way to look at it. And I don't want to get into a big "football vs. other sports" thing with you this morning, but part of the equation is that football is a bloodsport. The players are like machines for our amusement. If you equipped linemen with knives, I'm sure it would just be watched that much more. But that being the case, I find it rather amusing that bernstein can get so worked up over the "dirty play" of a Meriweather or a Suh.

I think it's a reprehensible stance, and it undercuts any sort of affinity he shows for the moral causes of others. The implication is smart people won't let their kids play football, naturally, but poor and or less educated families will gladly replenish the football pool. And that's all fine and well. Let them damage their brains for the amusement of smart people. But then he draws the line at offensive imagery, steroids, and player insubordination. Which is fine. But then he also encourages brain damage. He's all over the place morally, and not very coherent.

Even bloodsports still have rules. That's why Mike Tyson was wrong for biting an ear off but it was ok for him to almost kill a man with a hit to the head.

I understand that, but I think it's somewhat disingenuous to root for Tyson to crush a man's brain with his fists and then take self-righteous umbrage when he bites off a piece of his ear. It's phony. If you're coming at it from a "fair play" perspective, I get it. But that doesn't seem to be bernstein's take. He makes this big show about the depth of his care for humanity, but as long as that humanity is destroyed within an arbitrary set of rules, he "going full meatball" in front of his TV on Sunday. It's bullshit.

I don't think it is reprehensible. There are plenty of dangerous jobs I wouldn't want my kids to do and I would actively encourage those who have the means to do so to avoid them. It's different when it is personal.

I wonder if Lil Danny has made their their trained seal, errrr witty raconteur Martellus Bennett aware of his stance on that.

He was trying to draw a distinction between clean and dirty play. My point is, I don't think the brain really cares if it got crushed by a dirty hit from Brandon Meriweather or a clean one from Charles Tillman. And we know- because bernstein never stops telling us- that the mere act of playing professional football is going to result in a fucked up brain. So really, what difference does it make? Let them hit each other with hammers.
