But that '77 team was no good. They just played over their heads during the first half. 2004 was the team with no weaknesses.

IIRC, they started playing to their ability in late June...unfortunately the Hitmen started their fade in late August. :cheese:

That was still a damn fun season on both sides of town for young baseball fans. I watched the Cub in the afternoon on channel 9 and the Sock on channel 44 at night. Good times.

With iron-on decals for the possible Subway Series in the Sunday editions of the Sun-Times right around the All-Star game.

And every kid going straight for the ironing board a day or two later..... :eye:

I had that t-shirt with the hitman holding the guitar case full of bats up until just a few years ago. Of course it was too small for me to wear since about 1982.

You know, we had a lot of discussion here about whether the 2012 Sox "choked". Sure, it looked like they had the postseason in the bag and it was disappointing they didn't get there, but I can't call it a choke because they played a good season and probably did more than that team reasonably should have.

In the same way, I never really felt like the '77 team faded. It was a shock that they played as well as they did for as long as they did. That was a fun summer. All those home runs. Up until that time I might not have seen that scoreboard light up more than about ten times in my life and suddenly they were blowing it off three or four times a game. But man, that team just could not catch the fucking ball.

I cant see how 77 would have matched that.

2004 was the team built to win, all the holes were plugged and they just came off a deep playoff run.

Also, being a Priorfile, the game 6 to the end of 04 period is even worse

You could make a damn good argument that, on paper, the 2004 team was the best team in the long history of the franchise.

On paper for sure. I mean it depends what version you take. If Prior and Hawkins picked up right where they left off in 03, then you would have had something.

If you look at that team in late July when they acquired Garciaparra, what you thought the pitching would do, especially after Prior got started late, etc., I don't know what other Cub team people might have thought was stronger. Of course, we know how it turned out.

There were a myriad of problems with the 04 Cubs, but the one that undoubtedly did them in more than the rest was the bullpen. Borowski and Hawkins came in and lit fires all year long.

Also, maybe would have helped if Derrek Lee had the MVP year in 04 rather than 05

Even with all that, with a week to go they had a 2.5 game lead in the wild card with Prior rounding into form and all the pitching was healthy. They would have been a tough out in the playoffs.

You'll probably disagree with me, but I don't really pay attention to bullpens. I don't believe there is any such thing as a "good bullpen". What I mean is, obviously we can look at a bullpen after a season and rate its performance, but that same bullpen may yield wildly differently results the next year. The samples of work we have from these guys are so small as to be nearly worthless.

I'm surprised that in this era of pitch counts, no forward thinker has ever decided to assemble a pitching staff of twelve four inning pitchers that are all capable of going on a single day's rest.

Oh, I absolutely agree and this cubs team is what kinda put me over the top on that opinion.

I think there are a handful of closers you can count on, after that it's a "crapshoot"

I think the ideal thing is to develop young starters in the bullpen.

Yeah, and a few guys like Arthur Rhodes.

Watching that show really was like sticking needles under your own fingernails. It got me pretty pissed off.

Yeah, its ridiculous.

Id prefer a DVD that just goes up to the 7th inning of game 6 and then blacks out Soprano's style
