i used to have a friend who was one of those dead/phish guys who i carpooled to work with. about every 4-5 days he was coming up with some sort of dead/phish tape with the hopes of "converting" me to the cause (still to this day i get sporadic "hey you gotta go to a concert, i'll even buy the ticket man! you gotta experience this!") and like, shit, i'll give you that they can jam. they've got a hell of a bassist.

the one thiing i couldn't stand were those cheeky novelty songs, such as when they covered snoop dog's gin and juice. hearing them take the piss all peppy "WALKING DOWN THE STREET SMOKING INDO" yeah i mean, i found myself wishing death upon whoever was singing cuz it was tripe (i'm sure this brings to mind no less than 5 songs to stand as counterexamples to their covers/lyrics/singing =)

that said, i wanted to ask without any sort of animus or prejudice or prejudging, what is it about the dead/phish (with the latter being considered the superior band in terms of the actual quality of the music/ians) that compels their hardcore fans to want to go out and recruit people into the phish "experience?" i mean, what is it that compels you to provide this phish resource on the CSFMB? i reckon on the surface it's the handful of people who get digitally nudged into peeping their wares, but even deeper than that.... do you feel like they're a movement or a cause that's worth spreading via viral marketing?

again, i mean no harm and no apple carts were upset during the typing of this post.... i'm only trying to understand the mentality/mindset here. merci beaucoup!

Phish never played Gin and Juice. That song was mislabeled for years, on sites like kazaa and limewire. It was actually done by The Gourds. Why people think that is/was Phish is a mystery to me.

I don't know if fans of Phish actively recruit others, more than fans of any other band. The only people here that I have tried to recruit, are people that have already showed interest. Phish isn't for everybody, and I get that.

i mean, what is it that compels you to provide this phish resource on the CSFMB? i reckon on the surface it's the handful of people who get digitally nudged into peeping their wares, but even deeper than that.... do you feel like they're a movement or a cause that's worth spreading via viral marketing?

Why do you post paragraphs when a sentence will do? Why does anybody post about which concerts they are attending? Why does a thread about McNuggets get to 25 pages? How many more "Obama sucks" threads do we need? Why does anybody post anything about anything? I really don't understand what the problem is, if I start one thread about a band in the music section. This thread is pretty clearly labeled, so it can be avoided if desired. Nobody is forcing anybody to read anything that I type.

Having said that, there are several fans of Phish here, and other people have contributed to this thread. There are more than 3400 views, and they are not all from me. Doug and donspiracy were at the Chicago show(s) this summer. Darkside, hoju, FavreFan, and Houston Homer are big fans of the band as well.

Phish is one of the most misunderstood bands. Why do so many people who know nothing about the band, have such strong negative opinions about them? Why do people feel the need to bash bands that they don't like? To me, these are much more compelling questions, than why do I post about them. I think post-Zooropa U2 sucks balls, but you never see me posting about it. People like what they like.

Phish is the best touring band anywhere. They never needed radio stations or MTV to hit it big. They did that by playing phenomenal music. They play a different set every night. Just that alone puts them ahead of bands who play the same set every night. Read Doug's thoughts on his first experience. They are not some noodling jam band, they are world class musicians. If people want to ignore that, and just hate on a band for whatever silly reasons they have, it's their loss.

again, i mean no harm and no apple carts were upset during the typing of this post.... i'm only trying to understand the mentality/mindset here. merci beaucoup!

No worries. If I can clear up misconceptions, and there are many, I will attempt to do so.

Damn I haven't had the time to keep up with this tour. I've only listened to the Hampton shows so far. Gonna webcast Halloween for sure.
Also, Lou Reed died :( Was listening to Phish covering Loaded recently to prep for Halloween.
Never a huge fan of his solo work but I loved the Velvet Underground

This tour has been hot, just like summer. The boys haven't played this well since the late 90's.

My wife and her brother saw Phish play Loaded by VU on Halloween in Vegas in 1998.

Halloween is here, with the first of three shows at Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, NJ. Today and NYE are the two biggest shows in the world of Phish. Starting in 1994, Halloween shows have been three sets, with the first and third being traditional Phish sets. The second, is the musical costume. This is where they play somebody else's album in it's entirety.

Previous musical costumes:

10/31/94 Glen Falls, NY - The Beatles (White Album)
10/31/95 Rosemont, IL - The Who (Quadrophenia)
10/31/96 Atlanta, GA - Talking Heads (Remain in Light)
10/31/98 Las Vegas, NV - Velvet Underground (Loaded)
11/2/98 West Valley, UT - Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon)
10/31/09 Indio, CA - The Rolling Stones (Exile on Main Street)
10/31/10 Atlantic City, NJ - Little Feat (Waiting for Columbus)

The band was dropping hints during one of their webcasts last week, that they might be playing Sports by Huey Lewis and The News. Usually, things like this are a smokescreen. We shall see.
