So that my previous comment is not misunderstood to posterity, that was after he missed a wide-open tight end for the touchdown, not after the TD pass.

That's a good question. He's definitely one of the top 45 QBs in the league. Is he one of the top 32? Let me think about it for a while.

Confession- I have a huge mancrush on Adrian Peterson. He plays the game right, and he seems to always be having fun. He does everything asked of him. I heart Adrian Peterson.

Having seen him plenty of times at Wisconsin - he doesn't have a great arm and is quite lean to be a starter in the NFL. I want to say he tips the scales at around 180 which is small for a 6'5" QB.

That being said - he's doesn't turn it over 3 times a game either.

Thanks for the conversion chart IB. It makes listening to the three in booth even more fun. "That pass should have been caught by `cut`. It was right on `cut`s hands." much much better. :)

Brooks had a much more accurate arm than Vick, and developed a pocket presence. His problem was his decision making, and his choking...which was why I made the comparison to Rex. They seem to get rattled, and panic.

I just saw the draft chart for the Colts (Polian) over the past 10 years or so and nearly cried. While the Bears saw Thierry, Spellman, the loser RB from Penn State.. Rashaan Salaam (after his seemingly random rookie year)...

Oh, there's plenty more where that came from. Wait until around 9:30 or so.

First half notes:

I'm less concerned about the RB situation than I was before the game started. Benson looked good, and Peterson has shown himself to be fully competent when in the game. Special teams look good again- the only dark spot was Gould's missed field goal, but it was 53 yards and he still kicked the ball into the stands. Three starting D-linemen looked good. Mark Anderson, not so much, but Indy didn't run the ball at him, so it didn't show. He's leaving some big holes, however.

The main story will be Grossman, but let's deconstruct the numbers a bit (ignore the fumbles for a second.) 9-11 for 59 yards is a good conversion rate, although he still hasn't been going deep often. Seeing as how exactly zero fly routes have been called thus far for Grossman, and that much of the strength of the WRs is on those routes, I think the intermediate routes will open up once they start throwing some deep balls. I've discussed the interception above.

The first fumble was on the O-line, and Jaworski did a nice job of showing how Mathis was on his ass just as the read was being made. Grossman had both hands on the ball, he just had no time. Now, the two snap fumbles are inexcusable. But, you'd think that would be easily correctable, right? Small hands or no, it's pretty easy to take a snap. This had better get corrected; I'm still confident it will, but not as much as I was before. His footwork is better, he's checking down, he's stepping up into the pocket. These are all improvements.

All I have to say about Rex is, get the fucking ball from the center, for Christ's sake.

I think as long as there 42 yards and in, he's pretty solid.

There is approximately no correlation between field goal accuracy from year to year. This holds true every single year. A great year one year is not a sign of a great year the next. BUT- Gould does have one of the best legs for kickoffs in the league. That counts for more than people realise.

I am sticking to the sports forums from now on.
I just heard the Tafoya/Manning interview and she had to ask him about Vick. Peyton does not care about Vick or his problems. He just said I wish him the best, which is a standard answer to a stupid question. The problem with these media types is that they think everyone cares as much about a story as they do and that is just not the case. I despise the mainstream media in any incarnation, sports or otherwise.

I take back what I said about staying sober. God, how could I not drink during preseason football. This is a revelation!

So how's this- I call 'em Italian milkshakes; Bailey's, amaretto and brandy. 3-2-1 is the proper mixture. Trust me on this.

Very good point. Was thinking that as well. Why would you ask anybody in the NFL about that?

Will there by a Vick question?

EDIT: I'm sorry, I should have realized that the questions would be Grossman-centric

Mike Hass better make this team. People are saying he hasn't dropped a ball all training camp. I'd hate to be Droppy Rideau right now.

Question- what could you get for a Griese or an Orton right now from, say, the Falcons?

Corey Graham has made two good plays. The first was the break-up of a longish pass in the third quarter. Now there's the INT. More depth at DB.

Why do I think that Rex is going to end up being the Bears version of Bill Buckner?
