I have a WXRT shirt from the 90's.

That is Old School retro and awesome!

Is it the diamond or the vertical letters?

Cool. Wish I had been hip to the station in the '90s. People seem to talk a lot about how cool Johnny Mars used to be.

The golden age of 'XRT was the seventies and maybe early 80s. Eventually the playlist got smaller and smaller until today where it's pretty much just a Top 40 format with an alternative Top 40. They should probably try to get some DJs who aren't eligible for Medicare.

I think they still have a pretty damn good library, but they've really gotta step off some of their darling bands. I mean, why oh why in God's name is this station still so obsessed with the BoDeans? They're even promoting a BoDeans concert now! What, is Poi Dog Pondering not touring?

As for the DJs being too old, yeah, that's probably why Jason Thomas is doing weekday evenings. A while ago, someone posted an old promotional photo to their facebook page that had Lin Brehmer, Terri Hemmert, Frank E. Lee, Johnny Mars, Tom Marker, and Richard Milne. It was from 1992.

My dad grew up loving WLS and WCFL, and eventually worked at WLS for a summer, and so he's this big AM radio top 40 romantic who seems to forever harbor resentment toward XRT and progressive FM radio in general for ruining his outmoded concept of What Radio Ought To Be. How dare these guys talk in monotones without production music under them, or not play slick jingle packages, or play album cuts by weird bands. I had to learn that the station existed from my cool uncle. My dad likes WLS-FM now, which now plays the same tracks off Tom Petty's Greatest Hits and The Cars' Greatest Hits that XRT runs into the ground, but with an even older fart talking in between them.

I'd go with allearly to mid 80's since most of the popular music was God-awful MTV driven synthesizer lightweight drivel. XRT found and played the yet to emerge talent such as REM, Cure, etc.

They have always had their darlings.

The Pretenders
The Jayhawks
Depeche Mode
REM
The Replacements
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
etc.

Well, there's a lot that's romantic about AM radio.

XRT played that very track a few Sundays ago! I geeked out hard.

Right, right, and Richard Thompson, Peter Himmelman, Wilco, Pumpkins. But the BoDeans aren't even very good! They're not even from Chicago. I just don't get it.

Pretenders, though, I think I once went through a stretch one summer where I heard "Back on the Chain Gang" once a day.

Steve Earle.

Aand then there are the one shot songs they play the hell out of like "Hey St. Peter", "Royals", that Goyte song, or some shit by Bruce Cockburn.

Ever since i101 went tits-up I've been hearing a lot of '90s vanilla-ass top 40 that I never thought of as being the finest rock when I originally heard it on WZOK: Gin Blossoms, Moby, Goo Goo Dolls, Spin Doctors. "Take a Picture" by Filter, even! Filter!

Howard Stern has said that in the early years he interviewed for a job at XRT. He was either going to go there or the station in Detroit. I bet he would have loved XRT and would have never gotten into the kind of talk radio he eventually dominated.

Graduating from 5th grade is more impressive than you graduating from IU.

Just heard "Busload of Faith" from this fine, fine album to promote tomorrow morning's Flashback, though it must be acknowledged that they also had to mention the debut of Poi Dog Pondering.
