The radio contract isn't up for bids and the Score is already locked in with the Sox for like another five years. The station is too overrun by Sox fanboys to ever get the Cubs even if they could.

Hub just said that both the radio and TV contracts are open.

Yeah but Hub is a balding middle aged white dude that still wears an ear stud. How much of what he says can you take as truth?

Oh, I guess the radio contract is up now, too? I thought they just extended that a while ago. I stand corrected.

Still, WGN would have to be crazy to let the Cubs walk. We saw what happens to their ratings when PPMs track actual listening and the Cubs don't play. It's a fucking bomb scare. Even the Blackhawks have boosted their ratings significantly. Lose the Cubs and you might as well flip the station to all-brokered, you're that fucked.

The Cubs should start a podcast.

The only station I can see making a run for the Cubs is 890. They want more sports, evidenced by the fact that they're making Roe Conn do clueless sports talk for an hour. They could offer a simulcast on 94.7 for people who struggle with AM reception while keeping a 50,000-watt clear channel, which should be important to the Cubs. WBBM could do this, in theory, but CBS won't pay for two MLB contracts and cannibalize their other station. 1000 can't reliably be heard at night if you're west of the Fox River. 1160 is Christian and run on a shoestring budget; they wouldn't sign a contract with Really Smart People if they could. So from there, you're looking at what? 560? 100.3? Chicago Cubs Webio?

Hub just said that both the radio and TV contracts are open.

Hub also said that sometimes the Bears keep 8 guys in to block for Cutler which I find hard to believe unless it is some fake running play, and even then they aren't just there blocking.

I wouldn't see it so much as cannibalizing as much as owning the whole pie, and selling ads as a package.

I don't see this as a dealbreaker. Sure, you lose those hinterland Cub diehards, but they aren't included in your market share and you sell little or no advertising to them.

Ultimately, they'll stay at WGN. Heritage and what-have-you.

You wouldn't, but you're not a Sox honk like Mitch.

CBS used to have the Mets and Yankees but kicked the Mets off when their deal expired and moved the Yanks to WFAN. I can't tell whether CBS still wants baseball, because they let a lot of teams get away from them with the whole Sirius/XM rights fees fight.

And don't sell signal strength short. The Cardinals moved from KMOX to a teeny little stick in an effort to Monetize Everything, but the red-faced dopes of Cardinal Nation practically stormed the city with their pitchforks and meth vans to get them back on a station that people could actually hear.

The Score would do anything it could to get the cubs. I think it is the most valuable contract in town. Yes, better than the Bears! As I think most people watch Bears games, once a week you schedule it in, if you have to listen to it on radio, that means you are driving back from somewhere you didnt want to be! or, you are such a diehard that you have synced up for TV and the Radio for indepth Joniak analysis!

How many people really listen to baseball on the radio? I wonder how big of an audience that really is?

This.

I don't listen to the Bears on the radio unless I absolutely have to...that's more because Joniak is annoying and Thayer isn't good.

I do think the Cubs' radio contract is worth a mint in this town, with market share and whatnot.

That said, I don't know if the ratings hit for an afternoon game is really worth as many as the Cubs play.

Plus every other thing that happens in a Cubs radio broadcast is sponsored. Bears advertising is easy to sell, but you have much less airtime to work with.

WGN radio should keep the Cubs. The Cubs do greatly affect their ratings.

WGN TV should tell them to go fuck off. WGN gets plenty of income by carrying the CW & do well w/ the Bulls & Blackhawks. They also still carry Sox games, so they still have something for the summer.

In my perfect world, the Cubs would have all their games on channel 9 and the Sox would be who the fuck cares where. It's just the way the world ought to be. Cubs never should have gone to local cable in the '90s. Beginning of the death of the golden goose.

The absolute worst were those State Farm "let's get some insurance runs" spots, which they made Pat Hughes read even when they were losing. "If the Cubs can score a couple of runs to take the lead, and then get some insurance runs..." Every time I heard that I wanted to choke someone.

WGN is in a panic with the Cubs opting out of their deal after 2014. They have 30 days (since Tuesday) to agree to a deal at a significantly higher rate or the bidding begins. It's basically the Cubs that told WGN to fuck off. ESPN and the Score will both be interested if they get the chance at the broadcast rights.
