The reality is most players like structure,” Renteria said. “Most players like guidance. But when you’re the teacher and the adult, you must have a feel when you’re supposed to turn up the heat a little bit and talking about accountability.

“Everyone seems to think that accountability means you have to scream at somebody, you have to show the whole world you’re holding them accountable. The only (people who need) to know I’m holding them accountable are his teammates, himself and the coaching staff.

“The accountability factor comes in after the ballgame, in your office, over a phone call, a text (message) — by whatever means you can use it — you’re better served. I’m very secure in who I am. (People might say) ‘this guy doesn’t do anything.’ That might not be the case.”

As for his players, “Every now and then, you have to be a little firm, but always with kindness, always with love and the intent of making things better,” Renteria said. “That’s what I think I bring to the table, teaching and dealing with young players.”

I'm just not kidding. I don't want Mr. Rodgers managing these guys. At one point he mentions being the adult. Hey shithead, they are all adults! I wish this guy the best of luck but this "father figure" bullshit won't work with a bunch of millionares. He already sounds like he's out of step!

They'll be eating fried chicken in the clubhouse in no time.

Any manager/coach needs to start off as a hardass, tough, etc and then lighten up. This doesnt mean yell and scream (AK Lovie), but if you come in as a buddy, you are screwed if things dont go well, because you have nowhere to go from there.

Agree he sounded unenthusiastic, but Its just hard to believe that Theo didnt call 20 sources about him, talk to him 10 times and make him take 5 tests!

2 years

I just want to make it clear before I get ripped, I hope the guy works out. I already think though Sveum sounded more like a baseball guy in front of the media.

I never once thought that about Sveum. He always had an answer for any question. What did Ozzie sound like?

Ozzie was a blustering idiot. Sveum was a drooling idiot.

Easily bottom five with the Astros, Mariners, and Marlins.

jimmy I am pretty sure you unhappy with the Sveum hiring at first.

I think it is a pretty safe bet that you were going to be unhappy with this hiring no matter what.

No one knows right now. I would have been happy with Girardi. But after he was out of the picture this guy seems like he is the best choice.

If all those draft picks are as good as Theo says they are and Renteria sticks around until they are in the big leagues, he'll be the best manager in the world.

I agree with you. I hope he is the right choice, too. It's just that some of his opening statements didn't impress me but like he said,we will see what goes on between the lines.

On this board,I supported Lovie up until last season when I thought it was time for a change. I liked Sveum and thought he got a bum's rush. I'm not always bitching!

I think I called this guy the Aldi-brand Lou Piniella. I'm gonna go ahead and stick with that.

Trestman sounded a weird dope during his press conference. He's doing pretty well.

Trestman is doing very well considering he has only one solid football unit. Special teams and defense not so good.

He will be fine. I like him as manager and he will have the players respect. He managed team Mexico and that is a hard nosed group of players and he had their respect. Nowhere does it say players have to fear you. They just have to respect you, want to play for you. I think he will be a good teacher and be able to communicate with all the players and have their trust. Swaimer was just a bouncer. He was not a teacher and I doubt any of the players actually felt like he personally cared if they were better or not.

Now......my 2 year long dream of acquiring Chase Headley may be even closer to happening. This guy is a real clubhouse leader and a good player. He is not the incognito type of veteran presence, he is the reggie white type of presence.

....and on top of getting Headley the Cubs can now work on getting Ryan Hannigan to be the backup catcher since the Reds are rumored to be done with him. He doesn't strike out, he puts the ball in play, he is a smart catcher and good game caller and he is solid defensively. Its all coming together!!!!
