The Onion dropping print edition in Chicago, 2 other cities

The Onion may be the country's most famous mock newspaper, but it's not immune to the tough realities of the print business.

The satirical newspaper will end its print edition in Chicago, Providence, R.I., and Milwaukee with the Dec. 12 issue, the company said Friday, ending a 25-year run started by two students at the University of Wisconsin. The Onion will continue to publish stories on its website.

The Onion stopped distributing print editions in the city where it was founded, Madison, Wis., this summer and in its biggest market -- New York -- last year. At one point the newspaper was distributed for free in 17 cities.

The Onion, which dubs itself "America’s finest news source," has created many belly laughs and raised eyebrows over the years with headlines for real news stories like "Black Guy Given Nation's Worst Job" when President Barack Obama was elected or those just for fun: "Kitten Thinks of Nothing But Murder All Day."

Over the last several years, it tried to cut costs and contracted out some work. The Chicago Tribune Media Group took over ad sales, printing and distribution in the local market three years ago. The company moved its headquarters to Chicago last year after a decade in New York.

Shit, that sucks.

I can remember picking up a fresh copy almost weekly in my younger days. At least it will still live on online.

Bummer. Huge one.

I started reading the Onion in middle school when my dad would bring it home from work for me, so it's been fun to watch the paper grow from a weird little store of Madison/Chicago/midwest humor into what's, relatively speaking, a cultural monolith. Let me tell you, when you're in 8th grade and you're kind of a nerd, knowing you were the one clandestinely reading Savage Love in class made you feel just barely cool enough not to slit your wrists.

I liked picking up an Onion and a Reader back when I had 100-minute Metra rides home from the city.

Wasn't it a hoot when the homeless would scoop up every copy and sell them for $1?
