Welcome to the party. But what's 52 million anyway.

I said it was stupid before they signed him. It smacked of the GM giving in to stupid fans and trying to make the team a bit more respectable, by adding a guy who was nothing but a .500 pitcher (actually 1 game under, before last seasons 8-18 debacle of a season) with a 4.40 ERA (now 4.47 after a 4.98 last season). It was the first and to date really the only, move made in opposition to the stated direction of the team. I hope they will not make any similar mistakes and STICK to the plan.

I said you were stupid before you said it was stupid.

Jesus again the dope brags about something we all knew at the time.
Honestly no one thought it was a good signing. No one. But only one dope is bragging about it.

Hey Darkside the Dipshit, go look at the Edwin Jackson thread and you will see evidence to the contrary. In fact I found half a dozen people with posts in support of the signing and I only went halfway through the thread to get those. Unfortunately for you, the thread still exists. I realize you try whenever possible to argue against whatever position I take on most anything, but when the facts show you have taken an impossible position, it's tough not to look foolish.

Are you honestly trying to tell us that you are the only person who thought that the Jackson signing was a bad idea?
Because that's what you're acting like... that you knew something that NO ONE else did...
And as evidence, you find 6 posts saying people are cautiously optimistic that the signing won't be awful as proof of your powers of prognostication.
You could not possibly be this stupid.
Well, you could and probably are but I still find it shocking.

This was Darkside the Dipshit's original statement. After supplying proof from the Edwin Jackson thread that was not true, he backtracks and tries to qualify his statement. Just admit you were wrong and shut the fuck up after that, rather than trying to change the argument that I was not the only person against it.

The point, genius, is that you're bragging about this like you were the only person against the signing, which is positively ridiculous.

No, the point is that you can't admit you were wrong to say that NOBODY supported the signing. NO ONE.

I NEVER said that I was the only person against the signing.

What is ridiculous is your attempts to change the argument rather than just admitting you were wrong....and stupid.

Jesus. It's worse than when I said that Smardzija doubled his innings from one year to the next (88 to 174) and you jumped on that like a baboon on a pink ass. It's pretty obvious that you're a putz.
I enjoyed this. I love when you look like a goon.

Except in both cases (whether by simple math or providing the thread that proves you wrong) you were wrong and proven so. I'm glad to see you posting that you enjoyed this, rather than saying you are enjoying this. It's an indication that you have quit on this and that's just fine, because I am bored with it at this point. You should have just admitted you were wrong a while ago, shut up and moved on.

I did admit I was wrong a few posts ago... when I said I didn't believe you were really that stupid. I am wrong about that.

It's pretty obvious that when someone goes from 88 to 174 most people can understand why you'd say "Doubled".
And if a vast majority are against something it's relatively normal to later say "no one supported that". Kind of like saying "No one went to see "Gigli". No one went to see that. Yes, most rational humans can understand what one is saying when making statements like that, but you Steverino are one unique man.

Next week, we'll get to work on teaching you how to tie shoes so you can stop wearing those Velcro kangaroos.

Oh and since I'm on the subject of math... is my being proven wrong by simple math anything like you saying you had a 196 average when you did not have an average that high?
I mean, I got your averages here... don't see that.

How much could it possibly be to buy the rooftop owner's approval of the project? There view in not completely blocked and no one goes to those things to seriously watch a game anyway. The price would have to be a drop in the bucket on a $300 million project (which will most likely overrun) and should have been factored into the projections by REALLY SMART PEOPLE. Instead, I bet these guys factored litigation costs.

REALLY SMART PEOPLE would have had those signs in the facility by the start of 2013 season with construction improvements begun in October 2013. Instead, they won't be getting anywhere until 2015, which seems to be the default projection for everything happening with this team.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall in Joe Ricketts' Omaha office when the subject of his kids comes up.

That's what leads me to believe they have a cash problem. How else do you explain it? They couldn't possibly be stupid enough not to plan for it.

That makes sense. But with a new TV deal coming after the 2014 season, that problem may well be solved. But in the interim it appears they are stalling.

Ricketts used WAAAAY too much a percentage of his money for this purchase. You cant spend it all on a business and have nothing left to work with.

But then they give away the Jackson deal.

Strange happennings

as Curious Hair has constantly pointed out, a new TV deal may not be the bonanza financially that the Cubs are expecting.

They only used $400 M of their money, the rest is debt. It's also an issue of how MLB looks at you as a buyer, more down makes you a stronger buyer. They want 25% cash from the single owner or buyer, at least that was the line when the Cubs were for sale. And it is the line when people like Laetnner and Bryan Davis wanted to buy a MLB team, because they didnt have the money but they raised the money.

I have a feeling Magic didnt come up with $500 mill from his bank account to buy the Dodgers.

And yes, the TV deal is one of the revenue sources they had been expecting. "The Out" was negotiated when Zell was selling the team as he went and sold 20 year rights to WGN thinking that maximized revenue. Still amazed at how poorly Zell handled this deal for such a smart guy.

Ricketts seems to have enough money to build a hotel.

Don't believe the "poor me" story. He's building huge equity on the back of losing.

Im not basing it on anything he's saying now.

Going back to when the Cubs were for sale, the two things about Ricketts that stood out to me were the relationship with Selig and how he didnt have enough money to own the Cubs.

Im not sure about BigFan's numbers. I had previously heard he spent a lot heavier portion of his worth.

He's building a hotel! Do people in money trouble build unnecessary extra buildings designed to make them money in the future?

Is this a trick question?

Of course people in money trouble attempt to make more money.

And no, building a hotel does not mean that he's in a good financial place. It means his name is Ricketts and Big Joe can always co sign the loan.

If I couldn't afford my first house would I be buying a second?

Your first sentence doesn't go with your second sentence.

If you were ultra rich, maybe

But a hotel to Ricketts is not like a second house to you. That's one of your worst analogies ever.

Absolutely, if the second house is going to provide you positive income (renting).

It's all the same package. The "poor Ricketts, rich Ricketts" campaign is just public relations to get away with crying poor and the benefits you can get from that.

Once again, the Cubs are one of the most profitable in baseball, and for at least one year they were the most profitable in baseball. All Ricketts is doing is using debt to build even more equity and make even more money.

You could use the profit from renting to pay for your house.

He is obtaining the entitlements on the hotel. He will not be building, operating or managing that thing. He will control the land and sell off his bundle of rights to a chain. Maybe he will negotiate a percentage for himself into their ground lease.
