Yup. Lots of parents self diagnosing too without even going to see a doctor or getting a real test.

What if "Jimmy is allergic to Pasta" was pre-proclaimed due a sneeze while ingesting some 'saghetti'! History would need to be rewritten!

They need something to talk about with the other moms.

Made up problems with your kids are the new trophies.

I have developed allergies but I don't take anything. It's probably Corgi fur. That dog has been shedding really bad.

I don't think so. Kids have more allergies for what ever reason.

Honestly?

I feel like the influx of food allergy cases in children has a direct link to all the stuff women are no longer allowed to eat, or won't allow themselves to eat when they're pregnant. Case in point, we have a friend who wouldn't eat peanuts when she was pregnant. She said her nutritionist ( ) told her they were bad for the fetus. Her kids now have a sever peanut allergy.

My wife and I have discussed this, and she is determined that unless it's something truly awful (mercury in shellfish, for example), she won't cut it out. Everything should be done in moderation, and there is a severe lack of that these days.

Baby cows do not have a rumen either. It's obvious why its socially acceptable. Because the cultures of northern Europe have been doing it for thousands of years -- thriving on a cheap and nutritious food source.

My wife accidentally picked up a bottle of nail polish remover instead of water and drank it when she was pregnant. That kid tests out off the top of the scales academically.

Food for thought.

Did it happen to be after an Illini football loss?

This too. The anti-vaccine "I know better than doctors and science" crowd love to self diagnose. We know a couple of these people. They deserve to die of whatever malady their child (or my child because their child is not vaccinated) gets.

One time I had a preschool kid come up to me as it was my turn to bring snacks. He says I am allergic to red dye #4. I was like who the hell knows that? Of course, I am glad the kid did know but either something changed in all our food in the last 20 years or parents are up to weird ideas.

Spot on. I had to listen to my wives sister tell me how red dye 20 makes her two year old boy hyper. She read it in a magazine. Then my daughter who is three was scared about dye in food as she told it to her too

The avoidance of peanuts during the gestational period, and through the first 2 years of a child's life, is a preventative measure which helps to avert the induction of an allergic reaction to peanuts by allowing the child's immune system to mature before first exposure. Your friend likely did not properly complete the two-year post-birth stay, or she consumed something with a non-organic peanut product in it during the gestational period.

This could be related to the th1/th2 immune system response platform in children, as they are predominantly th2, I believe, until about 2 years of age, after which the adult th1 response dominates. Certain stimuli during the th2 phase can cause it to over-persist, thereby wreaking immunological havoc, and provoking an auto-immune response.

Interesting thought. My wife ate more peanuts during her pregnancy than is seen at a George Washington Carver revival. Neither of us have any food allergies . Little guy had bad eczema first year or so. We tried a variety of lotions and things and couldn't figure out why it didnt improve much . Finally took him to allergist and boom there it was. Allergy to peanuts that he kept getting thru breast milk as my wife continued to eat peanut butter. Once she stopped eating them his eczema cleared up and has been fine ever since .

That's not really case in point though. I've read that peanut allergies in US children doubled from 1997 to 2002 but there is no evidence that the people were eating more/less peanuts or the awareness of food allergies increased. What changed is the mfg processes and food supply. There is a protein in soy that cross reacts with peanuts. GMO soy was put into the food supply in 1996. There were similiar results in the UK with soy allergies after GMO were put in their supply in 1999. Dry roasting nuts also increases the allergenicity, boiling and frying does not. The countries that boil and fry have lower allergy rates than the ones that don't.

It might not be it though. Could be water supply like Panther posted, could be pesticides, could be something else. Nobody knows, nobody really cares, and nobody running the food supply or government will blow the whistle on this.

My daughter was never dx with an allergy but had pretty severe eczema as a baby. I did a lot of poking around and talking to drs on the cause. I also believe I have food intolerences and have changed my lifestyle. I think I'm better off.

It's not GMO. There isn't one piece of evidence that suggests it it any more than evidence suggests it's voodoo.

Pesticides in the water supply starts to sound interesting. It kinda seems that, across the board, the quality of everyone's water supply is not as high as it was 30, 40, 50 years ago. It is, however, almost certainly a number of different factors, irrespective of Occam's Razor.

The first student my wife had with recognized food allergies was back 20-25 years ago- poor kid was allergic to grass among other things. Very restrictive diet. He's now an adult, coached my son in soccer a few years, but I will have to follow up with him about those allergies, I see no limit on his intakes now.

She had a girl with life-threatening foods allergy a few years ago, and by the end of the year it was clear to be a helicopter single mom issue more than anything else- the list was shortened considerably. The EPI pen training was probably worthwhile in the long run.

We have been hybridizing plants for specific results for a century or more, were we just lucky with the results in the past, or was information on the rejection just less known? I don't grow peanuts, but I have not heard of much GM of peanut plants, maybe it is a widespread as with corn or soybeans.
