Well, I think the idea that America doesn't mind bullying because the Academy liked Mark Wahlberg being a bully was stupid. However, it's not as if the Academy has been known to operate strictly on artistic merit, because everyone knows Crash was a really hamfisted movie.

I'm a huge Kubrick fan, and I was a little suspicious of this. I went on IMDB to do some fact checking. Turns out my suspicions were mostly correct. Clockwork was nominated for multiple Academy Awards but didn't win any. Same for Golden Globes. It did win some New York Film Critics award thing, so you were right, I guess, sort of.
