So when Roger says "Farmer spends more time talking about St. Rita High School than the baseball game" -- which first of all, I laughed my ass off -- Dan says "well would you rather have him talk about White Sox baseball! lol White Sox baseball is bad! (except that I'm pretty sure the White Sox have a winning record since Ed Farmer became lead pbp announceri n 2006). But then to say that Pat and Ron didn't do baseball so much as they did a comedy act. Would you rather they talked about the Cubs in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, or 2010?

I think the extent to which Pat and Ron were "just a comedy act" is being severely overstated. Was Ron a stammering goofball who went off the rails? Of course. Did Pat sometimes indulge him and join in on flights of fancy unrelated to the game? Yes. But that's baseball! Games are long. There's lots of downtime. As someone who listened to Pat and Ron almost every game from 2004-2008, there was that silliness, but it was still ultimately a sideshow to the calling of a baseball game, which Pat Hughes has always done tremendously well. I don't care if he's "homespun" and doesn't have "edge." I've got enough edge of my own. I don't need it from Pat Hughes.

Dan's point, while very poorly made, was that if you really tuned in because you wanted to hear baseball talk, you didn't hear it with the Cubs. And I listened and still listened beyond Ron, and the Cubs radio broadcast was far too often devoid of detail, including the fact that after a while they started interviewing the seventh inning stretch guy and Pat began to take an inning off per game. I just couldn't listen for baseball only. I understand the Cubs sucked. Of course Pat and Ron talked non-baseball stuff. Just call in and say you liked the team because they were good together. Don't make a purist point out of it.

I've never felt Pat was devoid of detail in his call. I mean, the only baseball radio I've heard has been the Cubs, Sox, Brewers, Cardinals, and Reds, so maybe there's really heady baseball radio out there that I'm not hearing, but I've never had any complaints about not being able to follow the game. If I did, I probably wouldn't have listened to Cubs games all those years and just watched them on TV.

Dan lost the argument, as much as a guy who can hang up on the other person can lose the argument, when he let a prior caller stay on the line to shit-talk Pat Hughes but then started losing his shit over Ed Farmer criticism as if someone insulted his dad. It was rather poor form.

devoid of detail. What I mean by that is that there were long stretches where Ronnie was going off on something and I couldn't get the score, the inning, the situation etc.

Pat by himself on the other hand is right up there with Vin.

I listened because I had no access to TV. I suppose I was a captive audience.

Man, don't listen to Uecker do a Brewers game, then. You miss the score/inning, you're not gonna get it again for another ten minutes. And he's calling the game solo!

Bob Uecker (who Pat Hughes takes all his phrasing/pacing/inflections from) is the man, though. Even when he goes off on a tangent or doesn't particularly feel like telling you what the score is if you just happened to put 620 on, it's hard to mind, because you're listening to Bob f'n Uecker.

right. and when you're listening to Pat, you're listening to Pat f'n Hughes.

Unfortunately, Ronnie F'n Santo screwed everything up. Routinely. Every once in a while it made me laugh but it made me mad more often.

Bernstein: Now Dan, you're involved in this blue-ribbon committee or whatever they're calling it to fix the Dolphins. How can the NFL eliminate hazing?

Marino: That's a great question, Mike [sic]. I'm really concerned about that, but what I'm even more concerned about is prostate health, and that's why I'm teaming with GlaxoSmithKline to score a touchdown against enlarged prostates with our new initiative called The Score A Touchdown Against Enlarged Prostates With Dan Marino Initiative.

Probably because of your zeal to carry the water for their dumb arguments, even when Dan already spilled the water on his lap.

I think you might want to check my record before you cast that aspersion.
