I want this documented to bring up later. I'll bump this after free agency in the NFL is over.

1.5 million is the average salary of backup QBs. Bernstein said let him go if he wants that.

He's making 850k right now. To not resign a good backup because of a 650k pay raise is insane. A backup that can get you wins in 2 or 3 games if you need it. Over 650k? What? That's the difference in playoffs or not. That's not gonna kill your salary cap. Bernstein wouldn't do it. That's what he said. Wow. He actually went further and said the Bears wouldn't do it. His exact words, for the record.

He called callers stupid. Dismissed them. BERNSTEIN IS DUMB AS HELL IF HE THINKS THIS IS THE RIGHT DECISION. Dumb ass Boers went along with that thinking as well. Cuz that's what Boers does.

Now, when he's resigned at this figure, and I believe it will be a little bit more, Bernstein will deny saying this. So will Boers.

We'll bring this thread back in February or March.

Dan's flawed thought process is that Trestman will make any backup as good as McCown so they should only pay a backup 850k.

That coach in Green Bay was thought to have a great offensive system. A great offensive mind. How has he looked in the last three games with his backups? Answer: 0-3.

Bernstein:

Beardown: Yeah.

Mike McCarthy:

Beardown:

You're leaving out the very important point that a non-lawyer is coaching that team.

Wait, why does it matter who the back up is anyway, good or bad. Isn't one of Lil Dannys tenets that if your back up qb is starting , the season is over ?

Just think how many useless athletes are walking around town making a hell of a lot more than 1.5 mil. A winning NFL QB is worth an untold amount of money to a franchise.

That was his stance prior to the ascendance of Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick and the earth-shattering shittiness of Caleb Hanie at QB.

I should do some research in old B&B threads because I'm pretty confident that that was about the time his stance changed.

I just wish somebody at the Score would challenge The STEIN when he's wrong. Dumb ass drinky jumps on the air for stupidity. He can't win most arguments vs Bernstein, cuz, as we all know, drinky is dumb. He tries in certain spots to challenge Bernstein, and of course, he picks the fights where he is wrong and proves his stupidity.

This was a chance for dumb drink to win a lay up. He was silent.

Considering that the Bears paid Jason Campbell around $3M to backup after the Caleb Hanie debacle, and they have seen that Cutler, regardless of how much they value him, hasn't been able to play a full season (or close to it), McCown will easily get a large increase to stay with Chicago, and the Bears would be happy to pay it.

I wouldn't get hung up on the statements these guys make. They are going to make some correct statements, some wrong, some smart, some dumb, that's what they do. Just because they make definitive statments and shout down their callers doesn't give them extra crediblity.

I don't think there's going to be any multi-year deal given to McCown unless the Bears cut bait with Cutler (which is unlikely, and even then, they wouldn't be mortgaging their future with McCown, just buying 1-2 years at best). McCown has earned a pretty significant raise to be a highly paid backup - he's played well when given opportunites (provided, of course, he doesn't bottom out in his remaining games), and history has shown that Cutler will miss 4-6 games a season. The Bears need a backup they can count on - to date, McCown has shown he is that player.

I like what Trestman has done so far, but he's no genius although being a smart guy and actually giving good answers in his press conferences. His Time-Out strategy was flawed, despite talking long about it in long form (which to guys like Holmes/Bernstein meant the answer was somehow valid), but I don't expect him to be a genius or hold him to that level just because he uses the analytics (while sometimes flawed, and ever changing) to his defense.

I understand that's what Bernstein and his parrot (Boers) do. Trust me. But this is beyond stupid. In fact, I believe that after Bernstein got into this thing, he knew he was wrong, but had to keep it up to be Bernstein. It was one of those things where he said "I"m in, I can't leave now, MUST DO MY BERNSTEIN THING, even though it's bad and wrong". (Bernstein's wife: Yeah, tell me about it. It sucks. I have to pretend I like it." Beardown:  ) Cuz being Bernstein is never admitting to being wrong even when he knows he is.

Well, I know one thing. If another team is going to swoop in and steal McCown with a lot of money, that team better figure out a way to get Marshall, Jeffrey, Martellus, and Forte along with him. And the QB Whisperer too.

I know another thing, Signing him for 1.5 million is better than the next cracker you get. Be it as a rookie at 600k or another vet at 850k

24_Guy:

Beardown: Don't feel bad. I always win. It's really about common sense. I have that over most of you people.

Well that same logic would dictate that you sign Cutler as well.

edit- Cutler's price changes that, I know. Just saying, McCown has looked fine, but, he's getting a lot of help, too. Why worry about McCown's replacement being bad, but not worry about Cutler's replacement?

They are going to draft a QB and mcCown seems to be a great guy to have around for a young guy.

Maybe franchise tag. But I'd resign him for 4 years at a decent deal. Decent deal might be more likely with him missing games.

I understand what you are saying Don. The thing is up until now,Josh has been the reason the Bears have not lost a step after Cutler went down. He is not "managing" a game. He is making big boy plays when he has to. He also was responsible for driving this team to a comeback in the Redskin & Lions games. He isn't one of these "along for the ride" guys. Krenzel looked somewhat promising against the Giants,BTW. I remember he hit someone on a long pass play that day.

Remember how many times Berns said that if Cutler gets hurt the Bears are finished? Opps.
