Yes, but there would be more runners finishing in front of them.

I'm not an expert running strategist, but I would think you are more likely to win the faster you finish the race. The runners who are intentionally running slower times probably are making a mistake.

Distance runners will intentionally try to keep the pace slow if they have multiple races to run over the course of the day or two days.

I'm going to agree with conns on this one.

Golf is the easiest game in the world. I mean, the ball isn't even moving. It's no different than hammering a nail. The only strategy is obviously "see ball, hit ball, repeat". I really don't know what the big deal is.

Neither of these have strategy.

Oh, and by the way, a trained animal could win almost every track and field event. A human would win some of the throwing events. Good luck trying that with golf.

This may be true, but it in no way indicates one requires a greater level of strategy.

Come on. They let women play both of these hobbies. Women.

There's more strategy involved in wearing a watch.

That's true. I guess I can always fall back on "every other piece of evidence available indicates golf is more strategic".

I think it best you stick within the confines of your argument. You reached on that one. Hand eye coordination in no way suggests one requires more 'strategy' than another. More skill, yes. Is a 'skill' a 'strategy'?

Don't make me start a poll to prove the contrary, because I will. (Not really. I don't even know how. I'm forgetting this as I type it.)

Track and Field: Almost always feet. Sometimes hands. Ball or disc.
Golf: Feet (or cart (fat asses.)) Almost always hands. Ball. STICK TO HIT SAID BALL.

Advantage: Golf - more variables to control.

Ahh, don't the variables require a greater level of skill, which I still believe is not a strategy. I am awaiting confirmation from Boilermaker Rick.

I am still not convinced one requires a greater 'strategy'. Just want to keep this debate on point.

But that simply isn't true. You're making the same mistake often made by jockeys. It's easy to assume you're sitting on the fastest horse (or are the fastest distance runner). And it may well be true. But if a lesser horse (or runner) is far enough in front of you with enough gas left in the tank, it's going to be impossible for the faster horse (or runner) to make up that ground. A body can only move so fast. Everyone in the race generally belongs there. We're not talking about a huge disparity in talent.

If Tiger just aimed at the flag every single time, he would have 1000 victories by now instead of 74.

2000 if he walked slowly on the front nine first.

For a good golfer that is playing in tournaments, there is a lot of strategy that goes into a round of golf.

For me it's 'I Hope I dont kill that guy in the other fairway'

All of which is more strategy than "let me run as fast as I can toward that line at the end of the track"

My strategy is "Get the ball in the hole using less strokes than my opponent". Not exactly rocket science. How is that any different than "Run as fast as I can toward that line at the end of the track?"

Because each stroke likely employs a different kind of strategy-- hit over water, hit over sand, avoid those trees, aim a little right because the wind will push it back left, putt downhill, etc. Its not "hit the ball as far as I can" for every shot. However, for every single 100m race the 'strategy' is "run as fast as I can from now until the finish line"

Chess....Put the other guy in Checkmate.

No strategy

Golf is still not a sport though. It's a strategic game a la Risk or Zelda
