MLB.com: What do you think [Hawk] brings to your broadcasts and the team in general?

Reinsdorf: [Hawk] brings color. First of all, he bleeds White Sox. He loves the White Sox. Our market demands homers. In our market you can't do it straight. It's not like New York. When I grew up in New York with Mel Allen and Red Barber, they did it straight. When we hired Hawk and (Don) Drysdale in 1982, I asked them to do a straight network broadcast and it went over like a lead balloon. Our market demands homers, so I told Hawk to go ahead, be a homer.

So there is pretty much proof that Rongey is ordered to be a douchebag homer for the Sox.

He and Bernstein should go out to lunch and talk about how everything is better in New York.

nah he's just trying to overcome his natural cardinals fan tendencies to do the most professional job possible and thus get the best reference possible for when a position opens up @ KMOX ("Radio For The Living Dead" T. Boers) for a gig with the cardinals.

If Rongey was offered a play-by-play job in a one of the bigger AAA towns that can support the other sports leagues -- think Indy, Columbus, Durham, Charlotte, for example -- you think he takes that over doing wraparound and emergency PBP in Market #3?

Jerry should get a pass on that as he grew up there. He is not just saying that because his wife says so.

Really,after going through the Caray/Piersall years,I'm not surprised Jerry demanded a 360.

Guess I never really thought about it before, but all people from New York think Chicagoans are country rubes. So it fits that JR would think that of his fans.

That is pretty funny that he used the Rays home as his leverage. They draw less than the Sox without the Cubs interfering.

True, but the Florida MLB teams have won just as many World Series titles in their existence than the Sox and Cubs have combined for over the last 100 years.

He has the balls to say NY doesn't go for that when Suzyn Waldman is screaming about Clemen's sitting in George's box?

Yeah, I'm enough of a student of the game to respect Suzyn Waldman for what she's done as both a female broadcaster and as a broadcaster in the then-nascent format of sports talk, but that doesn't mean I want to hear that shrieking harpy try to call a baseball game. Worse, she's paired with John Sterling, who sounds good, but would sound better without his head up his ass.

The notion of New York being too sophisticated for homer broadcasters is pretty rich. First of all, you have the gaggle of cheerleaders and apologists at the MSG Network. I'm sure Clyde Frazier calls a game straight. The Sam Rosen who does D-Team NFL coverage is a far cry from the Sam Rosen who yells "GREAT SAVE LUNDQVIST!" on a deflection out of play. Howie Rose, although he's pretty funny about it, shits on everyone who isn't the New York Islanders (though to be fair, sometimes he'll also shit on the Islanders) while accompanied by yet another brain-damaged alumnus of the '80s dynasty who always sounds drunk, concussed, or both. Then you have the YES Network, which has written the book as we know it on being a team-owned RSN that does nothing but relentlessly promote the greatness of the team.

But Reinsdorf is right. New York's just a little too good for that sort of thing. SEE YUHHHH!

Am I the only one who remembers John Sterling as a Braves announcer? He was pretty good back then.

Sterling has great pipes, but he's become a cartoon with the "NYITT is high, NYITT is far" stuff, and all the stupid nicknames: "an AYYYY-Bomb, for AYYYYY-Rod!", "oh baby, that's Swishalicious!", on and on. Imagine if Pat Hughes went about his business until Soriano launched one, making him yell "LOVE MEANS NEVER HAVING TO SAY YOU'RE SORI!" There was also the hilarious time he got all haughty about how bad the opposing team's infield positioning was, only to walk it back when he realized there were two outs in the inning and they had just made the third.

But again, New York doesn't do that, because Mel Allen. And yet I don't think the Yankees have elevated a broadcaster to national work since Mel Allen. Even Don Orsillo from the Sawx has popped up on TBS in the postseason.

I agree with you, CH.

I just can't believe what a buffoon he's turned into since his days on the Superstation. I sense a SHARK vibe creeping in here so I'll end it.

When did he do Braves games? I thought he was a New York lifer. Even going back before Skip and Pete, there was Ernie Johnson Sr., so where did Sterling fit in there?

All I can say is that I have I said Jerry controls every little thing and he shouldnt be.

I know Jerry has this fan meeting with Sox fans , season ticket holders, every year to talk about stuff like this.

And while I dont know everyone of these season ticket holders, I do know a good bunch and not one of them appreciates Hawk. 2 guys I work with, a couple doctors and one S Side contractor. The contractor especially hates Hawk.

Fact is JERRY LIKES HAWK, end of story and thats why he not only stays, but does what he wants, when he wants. I dont know if he really believes it, but he likes to try and sell it like the next Harry. Like Harry or not, Jerry knows he made a mistake on that one and not ever getting rid of Hawk till the day the guy dies is Jerrys own self remedy to a mistake he made 30 years ago.
