It's difficult for a single football player to have a great impact on the outcome of a game. Though the QB is extremely important, he's not on the field for generally what is an entire half of the game, so I don't think Manning's lack of multiple SB rings should be held against him. He's got two SB appearances, several playoff games, and loads of records under his belt. That seems enough for greatest ever consideration, even if it means ranking him above someone with more rings.

Loads of records in a wildly changed game don't really mean much from my perspective. What does matter is the sense of calm and control that Manning has in spades in regular season games, but is rarely exhibited in BIG games.

Manning is all-world in feeding on the weak, but he seems incapable of leading against teams with actual talent and coaching.

Separate question, but who are your best ever, top 3-5 QBs?

I know on multiple occasions RR has said that Bart Starr is the best QB ever and wont likely ever be surpassed. He was just too clutch in all those playoff/championship games.

Elway, Brady, Marino, Montana

No order there, you can shuffle them however you please. I would put Elway #1 though.

From what I've seen in the last 35 years, perhaps

Brady
Montana
Staubach
Marino

then Elway/Manning/Favre/Fouts in some order.

Otto Graham absolutely has to be one of them.

John Unitas & Sammy Baugh would probably also be in there as well given the reverence they are paid. I just limited my list to guys I actually (& knowingly) watched play.

Are SB wins factoring into your rankings? Just curious why you'd cite Manning's inability to consistently win in big games, but then include a guy like Marino in your list. This is assuming you weigh SB wins heavily.

I do heavily factor in SB wins, but Marino was the best passer I've ever seen. He had an average at best supporting cast, including fair/poor defenses, yet they were almost never out of a game in his prime. When his Dolphins lost big games they were at least shootouts he willed his team in, unlike Manning.

I didn't really see Marino play, so can't knock him, but losing a Superbowl 16-35, and being ringless otherwise wouldn't seem to satisfy the criteria you're talking about, at least when compared to Manning.

I also think you're making an unfair generalization about Manning not being able to will his team to win or compete during shootouts. There's over 10 years of evidence to the contrary, though he never did it on a Superbowl stage.

Manning lucked into his Superbowl win. If the weather is good in Miami the Bears win that game, hell even with the weather being shitty they still should have won it.

For me I think Manning should be in the conversation even without a win. Since playoff success is so elusive in football, I don't think it should be weighed much in these sorts of conversations.

I don't know if this has been said, but the Bears could have run the clock down a lot more especially if they don't burn the timeout. A tie isn't good but it's better than a loss.

And actually a tie probably wouldn't have hurt them at all. They're fighting Detroit for the division at this point, and they already lose the tiebreaker to them. So half a game makes no difference at all.

I don't know. Look at Green Bay right now. From a top team in the league to a heaping pile of crap. And this is a roster that has been sold to us as the greatest, deepest roster ever. They won the Superbowl with 15 guys on IR because the roster is so, so, so deep. They never need free agents because they are so stacked. Yet how's that super deep roster looking now, just missing one guy at QB?

Yes Rodgers is absolutely critical to GB's success, but my comments were geared more toward asking if we should be softer on QBs not being able to win the Super Bowl. They put you in position to win a game, but they have next to nothing to do with how the other half of the team performs.

a tie would have been much better than a loss as far as winning the division goes

No. Tie would have been the same as a loss.

You'd still need to go 4-0 with the Lions going 2-2 to win the division. Just like the situation is now.

If Bears tied would have been 6-5-1
Lions are 7-5

Bears go 3-1 to finish the season at 9-6-1
Lions go 2-2 and finish 9-7
