Even if it was ambiguous, it was clear that it was a bad ending for Tony. He was either getting killed or going to jail.

The Sopranos Finale -- Did Tony Soprano Die?


The Mystery:

The ending of The Sopranos is either the best or the worst series finale in television history, depending on whether the person you ask likes staring at a blank screen or not. The show ends with Tony Soprano and his family munching on onion rings in a diner, with a suspicious-looking guy in a Members Only jacket sitting nearby, then getting up to go to the bathroom. The last shot is of Tony's face looking up at the door as his daughter enters, and then ... nothing. Blackness.


And no comfort except for the last bars of Don't Stop Believin' echoing through your head

Creator David Chase refuses to reveal what happened after that. So ... does the black screen mean Tony took a bullet to the back of the head? Was the Members Only guy a hit man sent after Tony? A federal agent? Or just a guy with diarrhea who felt self-conscious about going into a restaurant only to use the crapper?

What the Script Says:

To our knowledge, the script for this episode has never been leaked or released. We haven't read a word of it.

But actor Matt Servitto has.

Along with a whole lot of scripts calling for "angry bald dude who can't take any more of this shit."

Servitto played FBI agent Harris for six seasons of The Sopranos, and after a cast screening of the last episode, he talked to reporters about the script, revealing that the final scene continued after the cut:

"In the script, the scene in the diner went a little further ... The gentleman sitting at the counter was much more mysterious, almost like he's walking to the table to shoot Tony, and then end of script."

So, wait, the guy comes out of the bathroom and walks toward Tony? That would have made the scene like 90 percent less ambiguous, and according to Servitto, that's exactly what was supposed to happen. He told another reporter: "The scene cut as the guy was advancing towards him, as if he was about to shoot Tony. It was, I think, less ambiguous that Tony was going to get shot."


"He was also carrying a huge bazooka, but I have no idea what that means."

Of course, that doesn't mean it's 100 percent certain that the guy did shoot Tony. Maybe he was approaching him for a different reason. Maybe he wanted an onion ring. Either way, it's clear that this man was up to no good -- something the final version of the scene leaves out.

One other minor hang up I had was Phils reaction ito his brother being shot .It kept being treated as some random act of crazy violence as if it wasn't just part of an ongoing war.

It wasnt even the first second or third shot and it was obviously retribution for Angelo



You know what would be awesome would be a prequel starring Johnny boy and Junior in their day with young versions of Paulie, Carmine, Phil, Loggias character etc

They had a few flashback episode with Johnny Boy and younger Junior which was cool to see.

I love how Phil died. I hated how Johnny Sac turned out,he was class. I was and still am hooked on the show. Breaking bad can not hold the Sopranos jock,get fuck out if you even think so.

When the HBO series ended in 2007, many questions were left unanswered for fans concerning the fate of patriarch Tony and his family when the show cut to a black screen right before the credits. Creator David Chase has said in past interviews that “there was nothing definite about what happened” in the final scene at the diner but “if you look at the final episode really carefully, it’s all there.” To this date, fans are still debating what happened. EW sat down with Michael Imperioli to discuss his new film The M Word, but we couldn’t resist asking the Emmy winner’s opinion about that last seminal moment. Spoilers obviously ahead.
“David told me about a year before we shot that how it was going to end,” Imperioli told EW. “He just described what happened, he didn’t say what it meant, and he never told me what it meant. I never asked him. But I remember him telling me that everything goes black and a couple more details.”
Imperioli won an Emmy for his role as Christopher Moltisanti, the protégé of Tony Soprano, but his character was tragically killed three episodes shy of the finale by Tony himself after a car accident. But even though Imperioli wasn’t in the episode, he definitely has an idea of what that last supper meant.

“My opinion is that…we were in [Tony's] point of view in the last moments of his life and that’s it. He’s not expecting it, it comes out of nowhere and if you were shot, if someone assassinated you, I don’t know, basically everything would go black and [David was] putting us in those shoes at that time.” The theory that Tony was shot and killed in the last moment is nothing new, in fact entire fan websites have been dedicated to trying to prove it. But what Imperioli thinks of the message that was trying to be conveyed is definitely more personal.
“I think the message, whatever message David was getting at, and this is my interpretation, you know because everything is kind of falling a part by then for the Soprano family. You know, Christopher is dead and [Steve] Schirripa’s character is dead and Steve Van Zandt is in a coma — it’s kind of like the ruins of the Soprano family. When you’re going through these difficult times of chaos and trauma, the most important thing is to keep those who are closest to you together. He was with his immediate family, the ones he loved the most; I think that’s maybe the message if there is one.”
