I have been convinced to schedule a physical in January to make sure I am not dying of anything I am not
aware of. I am 37-1/2 and haven't been to a doctor in over 2.5 years. I just have never been one to go
very often but now that I am getting a little older I suppose I should try to go closer to once a year. Do
most of you cretins go on a yearly basis or just avoid it like me unless something feels wrong with you?

Just scheduled mine today. I always do it over the winter holiday season. I go once per year for a regular check-up as it is covered by United Health. It is definitely worth going especially if they do blood work. But only go if you intend to follow the doctors recommendations. I started going because of high cholesterol. My doctor gave me great advice on eating healthier, which I follow. I lost 40 pounds and have kept it off for three years. My cholesterol is normal now without ever taking medication. She has also helped with lower back pain by giving me material for core exercises.

This is a big reason why I never go. I find it to be a waste of my time but I am going to try to go in
with a little bit more open mind this time and actually ask some questions. Willing to listen to any
reasonable suggestions as the everyday aches, pains, creaks and groans are a bit more commonplace.
I know I need more exercise and should eat better. That is pretty much on me.

My doc achieved similar for me. No pills. Also, checks my liver function.

my doc told me don't bother changing your lifestyle. too hard. just take the pills. i proved him wrong, but it wasn't worth it and now I just take the pills and eat, drink, and do as little exercise as possible.

I actually switched doctors because the first guy was all about pills. I took notice of all the pharm company promotional stuff in his office. When I see my parents on hefty pill regiments, I vowed never to go down that road. I exercise everyday and eat well.

i am scheduled for an appointment with my cardiologist on the 12th. i have minor genetic heart defect that requires me to have a stress test every 5 years. I am in year 4 since my last one, but 3 months ago i started running again and recently i have been racing and i want to make sure everything is a-ok before i get too much further along. i dont need to pull a jim fixx and have a coronary one night while running. i am actually looking forward to the visit, for once i can report i am exercising and have lost weight, usually i get the same talk about being overweight and needing exercise.

I just went for the first time in over 30 years because my wife insisted. At 37.5 you will probably be able to avoid the guy sticking his arm halfway up your ass. It will give you something to look forward to in about 2.5 years.

Unless you have prostate cancer in your family tree, they recommend 50 now for those tests. Believe me that was a big worry for me. I turn 40 next year.......

I go every other year- seems about right. The prostate test isn't all that terrible- (my guy has skinny, warm fingers). I like seeing a PA, he tends to be more timely and efficient. Remember to fast from Midnight before you go in, it will save having to go back a second time for blood work. My health insurance provides for a refund if I send in the test results numbers, so it actually is better than free.

Can't you just find a woman MD for that kind of thing? you would think they would specialize in it.

Glad as hell I went to the doc when I did.

I was mildly disappointed and hurt when my doctor didn't check my prostate at age 40. He said unless prostate cancer runs in my family (it doesn't) or I'm African American (I'm not), I could wait until I'm 45. I think he just didn't like me.

Rarely go, don't want to go anytime soon. Didn't go when I broke my hip as a 22 yr old. I virtually never even take aspirin. I have little faith in the medical "arts". (Damn I hope I wake up tomorrow.... :silent: :-D )

Of course it doesn't help that a doctor once asked my then 94 year old grandmother how she stayed so healthy & she looked him in the eye & said: "I stay the hell away from doctors".

It's actually a lot better today. Doesn't hurt like it did Sunday. It's still pretty gross and black and blue. Well, purple. Kind of cool actually.
I can't imagine paying some sawbones a couple hundo to tell me that. I knew it the minute it happened.
On the other hand I did have a pretty serious issue and finally went into the doc. Had to have some surgery a couple weeks ago. Turned out good, glad I had the doc and glad as hell they took as good a care of me as they did.

Goddam right it does. Fuck man. I'm 36, was kind of surprised to have the troubles I had.
It's all good now but like when you're going in for surgery and they ask you about living wills... kinda spooky.

Yeah, but it was a lot of fucking fun when you were bulletproof. Or at least it should have been.
