I have both a Daughter and a son. My Daughter is 3 years older than my Son. There were a few Christmas' in a row, where she got an American girls doll as one of her presents and it was always one of her favorite gifts. The story behind the doll made the doll. It really was as if she knew the doll then. Unlike a Barbie or other dolls, this doll had a history. It had a story (and an interesting one at that) that captured her interest. The fact that it was a prettier, better clothed doll was a plus, but the story behind the doll was a huge factor in how much she liked her dolls. The kids share the stories about their dolls and often it determines which dolls they want. It's not just about which one looks the most like them, or looks the most attractive to them. The parties at the stores do get over the top, but the kids love them.

For a 7-8 year old girl that's having a birthday party, it's about as good as it gets. That, or a part at "Lets Dress Up" where they get to dress up is any one of hundreds of different costumes and act out a play, as well as enjoying a tea/cake party. You may find it silly, but I guarantee my Daughter had some fun birthday parties. My favorite though was her "Double Dare" party. I rented out the school gym for that and we did all kinds of games where water, eggs, silly string, green slime (same as used on the show) were incorporated. The kids were told it was going to be messy and to dress accordingly. It was a blast!

The implication being that one should spend the money on the Homeless person rather than on the doll. Fuck that. The homeless person would most likely take any money you give them and put it towards drugs or alcohol. Offer to buy them a meal and they are very likely to ask for money instead, because it's not food they want. Your Daughter and her happiness should come before someone that is not a family member, not a friend, not a neighbor and someone you probably wouldn't want to be in the company of for any length of time, lest the pungent smell of body odor and human waste make it's way to your nasal cavity. To feel guilty about bringing your own child joy is crazy.

I used to think that too until once I asked a guy if I could buy him some food at McD's (back when I used to work downtown). Dude lit up "hells yeah" and I asked him what he wanted and he asked for a fucking cheeseburger meal.
So I went in, ordered my meal and his cheeseburger meal (for like 2.99) and got him a couple QP's w/cheese (I think they were 2 for 2 at that time) went out and gave him the food and dude ate it like he hadn't eaten in a week, because he probably hadn't.
Saw him a few times after that... then one day no more.

There's no guilt in bringing anyone joy but at some point there are limits where its just ridiculous right? That its my daughter and a big deal to her is priceless but putting that aside...its a fucking doll and its made of the same materials of the 20$ one at Target


The homeless thing is just an example of a way the money could help people.

You might look at it as ridiculous when a 16 year old is given a car for his/her Birthday. The money spent on that car could have fed hundreds/thousands of hungry people. But those people are not that Father's concern. The people that he brings into the world (his children obviously) and his extended family are. Nobody should feel badly about having earned a better place in life and having the ability to share his/her good fortune with those he/she loves. This is not a communistic nation. Some people have more than others and usually it's because they did better in school, worked harder and made better decisions. Are they supposed to turn around and give it all away then, to those who slacked off in school, dropped out, are lazy and choose to abuse alcohol and drugs, because they feel guilty about having a better lifestyle? Hell no. They earned it and they should enjoy it.

My Daughter was a competitive cheerleader on traveling teams for 7 years.Between the club dues & travel expenses, we probably spent $5K each year. Yet guys are complaining about spending $100 on a doll. $100 today was worth $23 in 1975. Buy the Girl the Doll.
