Should be good for 100 Losses.

  Yeah, Phil's lineup looks closer to reality and 100 losses seems easily within reach. Pitchers and Catchers need to report so I can get optimistic and stupid again.

I don't want to rain on your guys parade with some Sox fan anti-Cub post so this is not it. I am dead serious about what I am about to write and it is quite possible that Theo and Jed also know this. For the next year or two even with a lineup and bad tradeable major leaguers or one of the recently posted mostly new rookie one the Cubs are about to get pounded. I make no comment on their players or management moves. I just expect and maybe that is why management moving slower that they will get beaten a lot by Cards, Reds and Pirates.

You're vastly underestimating the impact a full season of Jake Arrieta will have for the 2014 Wild Card champion Cubs. Not to mention Renteria can speak spanish with Castro. Boom shaka laka.

I was going to be sarcastic, but this guy could help. I wonder if they get another LHRP for around the same amount, they could package Russell with Jeff S. for some young prospects.

So what is he? If he is a LOOGY, you better watch out....

Last season, LHB hit .269 against him. RHB was lower at .253.

By comparison, Russell was at .183 against LHB and .321 against RHB

By Steve Adams [December 9, 2013 at 4:28pm CST]
4:28pm: Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post (Twitter links) hears from a source that the Nats would listen to offers on Storen, though any talks with the Cubs are in the very early stages at this point. Kilgore identifies Nate Schierholtz and James Russell as a couple possible fits for Washington if negotiations became more serious.

4:00pm: The Cubs are looking to the trade market in their search for relievers and have eyed both Tyler Clippard and Drew Storen of the Nationals, among others, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times (on Twitter).

Clippard, 28, is controlled through the 2015 season and has a 2.73 ERA with 10.3 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9 over the past five seasons. Storen, 26, may have fallen out of favor to an extent with the Nats in 2013 following a career-worst 4.52 ERA and a brief demotion to the minors. The former No. 10 overall pick owns a career 3.40 ERA with 8.4 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 since being promoted in 2010, however.

Either one could step in and close but here are the salaries for each:

Clippard: Made 4M last year and under control through 2015
Storen: Made 2.5M last year and under control through 2017

In other news from Mark Gonzales:
Quote:
Outfield: With left-handed hitters Nate Schierholtz and Ryan Sweeney under control, a right-handed hitter could be essential for balance.

This could be the last opportunity for Josh Vitters and Brett Jackson, although they appear better served in another organization with Almora and Soler part of the team’s building blocks.

 Say it isn't so!

They will surely be dumping Russell in the next few days. I wonder what he is even worth. I would package him in my lake or vigelbach deal with the padres for my guy chase if they need a sweetener.

Once again, I'll say: Bring this irritant Vitters up, play him and let him fail and cut him. He's like baseball Harvey Unga. Always hanging around.

You probably have to give him a shot this year - both him and Olt are washouts thus far as 3B's. One of them has to get a shot to play every day in the majors and succeed or fail.

I think you need to let Luis Valbuena get AB's all around the outfield in the pros because that is definitely going to be a piece that is present the next time the Cubs compete for a division title in 2030

Lots and lots of chatter about a Samardzija deal possibly going down today. Jed meeting with his agent about an extension this morning might be a last chance to stay with the team sort of thing.

The Reds peaked already. The Cardinals are forever and The Pirates will begin to fade.

But there are always three good teams in the division

Well, it seems Shark wants almost David Price money but the Cubs are telling him he's not worth that yet they are trying to trade him as a Diet David Price. Something's got to give.

I think the part where any comparison to David Price is made is a good start.

 David Price could retire today and Shark will never approach being as good as him. Thats the problem with him he thinks he's as good as a top flight starter and he's barely a 3rd . That said if Jestein can convince some team that he's an ace and get a nice return for him , launch him fortwith.

He's a poor man's Price. It's a good comparison

Very interesting to see how they handle this. Now is when the heavy lifting begins for Theo and the Boys. They've been making tons of small moves adding organization depth and low impact players to prevent them for losing 100 games. If they end up trading Samardzija he should bring back a couple high impact players they think will help them win 100 games. Who will they target.

It's not a 1:1 comparison though.

He's a young strikeout pitcher who throws a lot of pitches. Just not as good as Price.

Not a lefty, thrown 200 innings once (and faded when doing so), AL vs. NL, highest ERA 3.49 vs. lowest 3.81 (merits of ERA can be debated later) worse SO/BB.

The only similarities seem to be age and strikeouts. I guess a very poor right-handed David Price is a good comparison.

Poor/Very poor....not much difference there.

Price also had a 4.42 era and is starting to become a guy who misses starts

They're system is kind of gutten now. I can't imagine they would move Archie for Samardzija
