 That would be me today. Guess the managers decided to to some managing today and as I walked in 13 minutes late I was accosted and asked if I had an excuse as to why. My one word reply was nope. So they sent me home ostensibly without pay but we'll see about that. Funny thing, as the morning wore on and more people arrived late, only a couple more were sent home while others were allowed to stay and work. Seems like a pretty clear cut case of discrimination doesn't it?

Do the people who stayed have something in common (not usually late)?

This will be an interesting thread. People feel very strongly about being on time.

Are you normally late?

Im glad I dont really have a rigid start time.

It's my knee-jerk reaction to give management the benefit of the doubt too. I mean, if those guys weren't wiser, smarter, and better, why would they be in management positions anyway?

That was my knee jerk reaction to figuring out whether it was discrimination, which was his question. Asshole.

My company learned a long time ago that things like this don't matter. Granted, our folks are mostly salary based, so we don't have to worry about breaks, overtime, and the like. For hourly employees, it is important that proper time cards or kept otherwise you open yourself up to liability.

We've gone completely to flex hours where folks are free to come in anytime between 6:30-9:00 and leave as appropriate based on their start time.

Fortunately, I have the same arrangement. It's nice.

I work in a 24 hour room, so we relieve eachother (hello). So you just have to deal with each other if someone's late. No one really takes advantage. Works well.

Ill give you the full disclosure warts and all. We don't punch a time clock at all but we all have defined start times for out jobs. Most of the people are generally about 5 to 10 minutes late everyday. Usually because we start so early there aren't even any managers around to document who comes in and at what time. There are a few like in every job who push the 5 to 10 minute late into 20 to 25. Again 80% of the time there aren't any managers around to document this, the work still gets done and everyone generally goes on about their days. I used to be a stickler for being on time and I wondered why are people being allowed to come late everyday with nothing being said about it? but because nothing was ever done about it I felt less compelled about arriving on time as well. Brass tacks, I'm at fault .I have no excuse , I still stopped and got my mini mart coffee even though I knew I was going to arrive late. I just find it odd that on the coldest fucking day in 11 months this is where they chose to draw the line and it wasn't even a firm line as some were allowed to stay and work despite being even later than I was. Matter of fact the guy who is assigned with me on the same job at the same time walked in at the same exact time I did and he was allowed to work. I didn't kiss ass and make up some excuse , the manager didn't like my answer of nope so he sent me home. From what i understand, 3 people were sent home, at least 7 others were late and allowed to work. Now I may still end up being paid for today as I logged in our work site and its still showing me as present and not sent home. Again I really have no problem if they're going to start enforcing start times and such as long as its consistent and even but knowing these assholes, this is a end of year we are slow lets crack down type thing rather than the beginning of a new enforcement policy.

I've done this before with people who are chronically late. Like 2-3 times a month, and more than just a few minutes. I don't like doing it but sometimes you have to send a message.

I hate being late to work, social functions, band practice, family parties, anything. My wife sometimes has no sense of urgency as to when we need to leave the house. If I'm not a few minutes early, I'm late.

A work of advice, BR. Simply saying "nope" or "i have no excuse" comes across to management as saying 'leave me alone.' Its just not the best way to go about it. Now, maybe sending you home isn't the best either but you can always ALWAYS plead ignorance once. I set my alarm clock wrong, it was -7 and traffic was bad, there was an accident I had to dizzy around, my train was running behind, etc. Anything is at least better than "nope" and saying "well everybody else is always late" isn't a glowing defense either. From the management standpoint, rules and rules and if you are supposed to start at 8am and you clock in at 8:02 you are late. Yeah, it sucks and I certainly am not that petty and agree that management should have given you some sort of warning. But the bottom line is that it is up to the employee to be at work on time.

One of my sisters-in-law always arrives about a half-hour early. The last time we hosted a party I was in the shower and she was ringing the goddamn doorbell. My wife told her to wait in the car until noon.

It really IS rude. I think it's people flexing how close they are to the host. That's why its usually family.

What time is everyone else coming?

Obviously poor management. Like Dale Sveum trying to crack down on Castro after watching 200 games of the dude being a slackass. Little late now buddy!

Not necessarily true. Early at the party means more hands to help out.

Yeah, I could see Frank being a good mule ... grab that cooler ... light that grill ... tote that barge ... lift that bale ...

I agree Frank and I'm wrong for coming in late no doubt. Im totally convinced it was my flippant response that got me sent home . Just don't think you can say as a manager " hey you were late go home " and turn around and tell someone else who was equally as late they can stay because you like their answer better.

It's best to give him the grunt work you don't want to do.

Go on the roof and clean out my gutters! It's for the good of the party!

Tell them that time may not actually exist and that we don't yet have a strong enough understanding of the universe to know and therefore it is impossible to ever be late.

Took us a long time to get this one worked out. We still struggle with it at times. I have had to learn that for some things it is ok to be late and I can go on her schedule. But at other times I have learned that if there is something I have to be on time for we have drove separately.

Yeah...My ex wife was habitually late for everything...to the point that it would make me angry...and there were a few occasions that I just went wherever without her.

My wife is usually pretty good at being on time...unless she is responsible for dessert. Then we are always late. It's been like this since we started dating, and it doesn't bother me.

I also prefer to be ready to go, before we have to leave. She is ok with running around to finalize everything right up until we hop in the car and go. I'd much rather prefer to get it done earlier, then relax and watch TV or something leading up to the departure.

I'm still working on her, but she's starting to see it my way.
