Culpepper was with the Vikings after he left. But you're point is still valid. He did it with Randall Cunningham, Carter and Moss in 98. They went 15-1 and lost in the NFC title game. Ravens hired him. He never found a QB thus his offense sucked.

Sometimes the key to success is just showing up at the right place at the right time.

It still amazes me he never got another job. I wonder if the same thing will happen to Gruden.

Different. Gruden has been offered jobs every year. He doesn't take them. He's just looking for the right one for him.

Nobody offered Billick anything.

There comes a point where the league passes you by though. He last coached in 2008. It's been 5 years. 2/3rds of the jobs in the league have opened up since then.
