Every DeJesus hit was like that. Bouncer between SS and 3B! he had 900 hits in his career and 872 were bouncers!

Too bad he never learned how to steal a base!

Thanks for making my day! I remember that game. I was working in a food co-op and we had the radio on. I let out a cheer when Biittner knocked that ball out. It was the season after they dumped Madlock to the Giants I think. In return they got RF Bobby Murcer and 3rdbm Steve Ontiveros who batted .290 for the Cubs that year. Gene Clines killed lhp,but was a huge liability in the outfield.

That was a good team indeed. So was the '77 team before they faded (of course). Buckner and Kingman are 2 of my all time favorite Cubs!

Goes to show you how childhood memories are wrong a lot of times. I seem to remember Ontiveros being horrible for the Cubsand never approaching .290. Another one was I watched hilights of the 77 All Star Game and Jerry Morales made the team , hit .331 first half of that year. I don't remember him being anywhere near that good for a half a season.

Jerry Morales is the most under rated Cub since 1970. His stats were pretty darn good for the Cubs. He seemed to hit line drives all over the place and was an above average cf.

He had that basket catch down pat too.

I remember that Mark Lemongello ejection. I don't blame him for giving Dutch Rennert the double bird.

The thing I remember most about Manny Trillo was that if the pitcher hit a grounder to him, he would always wait until the last second to make the throw, in order to make the pitcher run all the way. I think he got a fair amount of beanballs in response.

Wow....that's my childhood Cubs wheelhouse right there.

Kingman.....what a stud.

IIRC 77 and 78 teams had big leads early and June swooned them away.

I pulled up Ontiveros' stats and he had 2 good years with the Cubs, 1 off year, then just disappeared. Strange. Must have been an injury or something. Most of these guys hang on to get every penny they can get. Not him.
