I believe that movie does the best job of capturing what it felt like to be a kid as Christmas approached. Of course it is harder to understand that when you watch two scenes and then decide the whole thing sucks.

it's a natural knee jerk reaction when everybody's telling you you're supposed to love this thing you've never really discovered for yourself yet.

CH's thoughts of "christmas story" aren't legitimate because you can't fairly criticize nor praise something you haven't given a full viewing of. however, his thoughts of being sick of being told how great it is are legitimate.

if he ever gets the chance to give the film a chance, i think he'll be pleasantly surprised. it is a very fun movie, and as BR said, it really does capture the youthful lofty excitement of christmas. it's nostalgia.

i'm not sure CH is much of a nostalgic person...so he may never like the movie. and that will really be a defining moment in the downfall of civilization.

i wonder how bernstein would've reacted to someone saying something similar about "midnight in paris", a movie he gushed over.

I love nostalgia, but I don't suppose I could relate to "youthful, lofty excitement" for the holiday. I know enough to know I wasn't much of a Ralphie. And growing up in a decidedly Christmas Story-free household, I don't have the sentimental attachment and never can. I will note, however, that my dad and I have a day-after-Thanksgiving tradition of watching MST3K: The Movie, only broken this year after about a 13-year streak because I lost the DVD, which was a transfer of an SLP-mode videotape off HBO2, and I'm too cheap to rent it off Amazon Prime. We watched I Accuse My Parents instead.

The weirdest thing is that there's always like a degree of separation or two between my direct family and people who do love A Christmas Story. My cousins' SOs are both from Christmas Story-watching families, though my cousins don't get it any more than I do. One family is indeed kinda loud and coarse, the other is extremely taciturn. My mom's cousins like A Christmas Story. They're from Rolling Meadows by way of Avondale but sound much more like the latter than the former. They refer to their mother as "Ma." All three of these families are Catholic whereas mine is most certainly not. I don't suppose that's significant, though. It could just be that my household was the only one in the world that didn't like the stupid goddamn BB gun movie.

I do think you'd have a different perspective if you actually watched the whole thing in a row. You may still hate it but I think you'd at least understand it is more than just a story about a BB gun.

It sounds like you've assigned a lot of weight and peripheral things to a movie that you havent seen.

Does your family celebrate Christmas? If not, or if not in the same way, I could see the movie not hitting home for you.

But still, its fine.


Also, remember that it's nostalgic for Baby Boomers so that's the reason for the overlove and overexposure.

I have to admit I've seen about as much of it as CH, but isn't it really a movie about childhood more than Christmas? Besides, that, most of us didn't grow up in alien families, but we still cried when ET got sick.

Should watch A Christmas Story director's cut: the full frontal nudity, the cheeky naked horseplay of the older female cousins, the heroin induced surreal fantasy and subsequent coma scenes really make the movie special. Knowing that the director married his wife's adopted child proves it as genius.

i would say just ignore the stuff about "a christmas story". it will always be a movie that's cherished, but only because it reached a few generations and it's pretty much always going to be one of those "treasured christmas" flicks. it doesn't help that it's shoved down everyone's throats for 24 hours straight on tbs every year but that's why remote controls were invented.
