Now, I loathe Ben Stiller (the director) so this is certainly a biased opinion.

The trailer for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is the most vomit-inducing combination of visual imagery and music I have had the displeasure to view. I didn't think Stiller could possibly annoy me even more after watching him in Greenberg. But he has outdone himself.

I already hate the movie.

It has one of those white person spreading their arms wide in a moment of triumph scenes in the trailer.

A middle-aged office drone who dreams of bigger things rides a skateboard. Oh, how daring and suburban of you, Ben!

He loves a woman who has no idea he exists. Never seen that trope used before.

If he would only take a chance he just might find out what the world has to offer. Just let go. Indulge yourself just a little more you pompous little prick.

The movie has this vibe of wanting to be deep, artsy, and profound but I bet it is contrived, dull, and soulless.

I could be wrong.

Fuck you, Ben Stiller.

i suppose "cloud atlas" made enough money for studios to think these self indulgent vanity 'the world shall set you free' projects can continue to bring in money.

so now we have this. ben stiller is not the guy i'd cast for a role like this. he is not an everyman. steve carrell would've made more sense but even he's too over exposed for a vehicle like this to work.

it looks like a movie zooey deschanel should've starred in back in 2004. i can't stress enough how little interest i have in this movie...and i like ben stiller.

i even somewhat liked "greenberg" even though it was "i'm mr. cynical stiller, aren't i hip?" ben stiller.

This was a book I skimmed for some throw away elective class in the second semester of senior year. I knew just enough to pass, or not, and the teacher refused to fail a senior in his walk off semester

Thats charachter assassination at it's finest....those dogs were all totally hot for Kev.
Seriously, I know this is going to fly in the face of the predominant thinking here, but I'm looking forward to seeing this. The message that people shouldn't allow their fears to keep them from doing all the things they should do and are capable of, or should at least fail trying...is a good one. Too many people let themselves get in the way of their own success and happiness. I'm betting it's pretty good.

Just saw it.

It's a good enough, but not spectacular. I'd say it was a "B". There's really not a lot of..........plot at points. It's an awkward comedy. Like most Stiller flicks.
Soundtrack is good and the scenery is good too

Saw it yesterday and had much the same reaction. the scenery in Iceland and Greenland are particularly spectacular. Did you know that he did all the skateboarding in the movie himself? Pretty impressive stuff. He also did the jump from the helicopter into the ocean himself-no stunt double. It was worth the price of admission, but nothing exceptional. Honestly, I was a bit disappointed.

i think ben stiller's an OK enough guy..... i mean he was onto something with heat vision and jack (it's a pity that wasn't picked up, ranking right behind lookwell in terms of my rankings for shows i wish were made) but yeah from teh second i found out this movie existed via teaser/trailer i was just scoffing and thinking "well somebody really wants an oscar, eh?"

didn't we already have the movie where ben stiller was a quirky everyman dealing with the banality of his day-to-day life to rise up and be interesting enough to find love and thus his place in life? i reckon it was called greenberg, and the whole thing was about some listless middle-aged everyman deciding to rise up and grab life by the balls in the name of CARPE FUCKING DIEM, leading us to have such poignant scenes as the following exciting description from wikipedia:

"Meanwhile, he calls Florence to meet up for a drink. Since he does not drive, as a New Yorker, she picks him up. They stop at her apartment to pick up her purse, which she forgot. Roger comes on to her, and they begin to have sex. Having just come out of a long relationship, Florence stops Roger, not wanting to have meaningless sex."

of course, for greenberg the REAL adventure isn't getting high with kids and running off to australia in the name of adventure, it's really having the balls to commit to a relationship with the true love he was too daft to see that he had all along. i'm sure this movie will have him eventually live out the daydreams of grandeur with the hope that being an adventurous guy will give him enough "it factor" to win the heart of kristin wiig, which will lead to him invariably actually doing that something adventurous, only to realize "you didn't need the feather to fly, dumbo!" and then and only then will he be complete by realizing he was always good enough to bag kristin wiig and then give us the metaphorical equivalent of stuart smalley's daily affirmation ("i'm good enough, i'm smart enough, and doggone it: people like me") and then fade to credits on the final note of a finally-happy-everyman and his true love.

so hey hollywood, if you're reading this post.... can you please do us all a favor and just give ben stiller the oscar so we don't have to have another plucky everyman-oscar-grab-movie going out of its way to convince us that it's a really big deal?

oh wait.... what's that hollywood? you say that leo dicaprio is doing the same thing with scorcese flicks and you have to hit him off before stiller? well c'est la vie.... i guess i'll wait for the feelgood movie of 2015, "rothschild", where ben stiller plays the quirky everyman Lionel Rothschild, a descendant of the banking empire that basically owns money and us by proxy; he's a man who literally has everything he could ever dream of having and thensome.....but when he's vaulted into a situation where he's doing a favor for his old college roommate he then realizes that without the love of maya rudolph/tina-fey/hey-why-not-kristen-wiig-again he truly has nothing....but watch out Lionel: your stuffy family doesn't approve of you hooking up with a non-blueblood peasant chick! * dramatic squirrel interlude DA DA DAAAAAAAAAAA style with the head turn *

hijinks ensue to the point where there's a gag scene where he goes to pull out $20 from an ATM and he doesn't have enough available balance to pull it out (thanks to his family's disapproval of his mingling with the peasantry) despite the fact his overall balance is comedically listed as "infinity"....you know, just like the rest of us, it's like he technically has everything but he really has NOTHING without the love of that even-quirkier everywoman who's just like you, mary sue!

yeah yeah yeah tl;dr i know that nobody's reading this.... fuck off and kiss my burning hot yule log! =D

Read all of it and yet somehow (in addition to being disappointed by QBovif's promise of mind-blowing sex if I took the challenge) I got a better notion of what's wrong with 'This fucking Walter Mitty movie' from a random RT 5 word review:

"Eat Pray Love' For Men."

and that's having only the vaguest idea of what Eat Pray Love might be.

You know what's wrong with The Secret Life of Walter Mitty? James Thurber isn't funny. Maybe they liked all that wry shit back in the WWII era, but we want jokes about taking shits and farting, dammit!

Also cant stand Stiller. More when he tries to be funny, because he just isnt even close to a funny guy.

When he plays the shlub, he's just a guy with zero personality, thus dont care either way that he is in a movie they could have cast any no name actor to play.

I don't. I used to love a Dennis Miller in his prime. I like all kind of comedy as long as it's funny but body function jokes are cheap & easy.

Maybe that's why you bombed at the Comedy Cottage. Not enough fart jokes! Nobody's diggin' your wry observations but you, kid.
