Not a big fan of Christmas shows or movies.

I will watch A Christmas Story with my kids on Christmas Eve but that will probably be it for me.

Which part did you find depressing? The physical assault on a child? The perverted peeping Tom of the naked teenage girl? The violent, scary proposal? The prostitution? The verbal abuse of the senile elderly? The attempted suicide?

All that stuff just screams "Christmas" at my house.

Never thought of it like that. I think it is one of the most moving and timeless movies ever made. Not happy but there is something comforting or heartwarming about it.

I have never seen either of those shows. Thanks.

Here ya go Rick. They don't make 'em as great as Jackie Gleason anymore.

These are the ones we are watching on repeat for the last two weeks:

Home Alone 1 (sometimes 2)
Elf
Santa Clause Trilogy
Jingle All the Way (Love me some Turbo Man)
Miracle on 34th Street (Matilda girl, not the old one)
Christmas Vacation
Polar Express

My son likes Santa Buddies, Mickey's Christmas and Winnie the Pooh Christmas.

Wife loves I'll Be Home for Christmas, which is that shitty JTT movie. She also likes Four Christmases. Bad.

It was a carelessly written sentence, as I had had a few. I prefer the plot and songs of Holiday Inn and Fred Astaire to the plot of
White Christmas and Danny Kaye. That said, I like White Christmas, and I really like Vera Ellen and Rosemary Clooney. "Lord help the mister that comes between me and my sister, but Lord help the sister that comes between me and my man!"

It's not that one is good and one is bad. I like both, just one more that the other.

Got it. I thought you were referring to the singing talents of Astaire vs. Crosby. And while I can appreciate Astaire's vocals within a certain range, Crosby was the all-time best and Hawk can back me up on that.

I don't have strong opinions on the movies but I prefer White Christmas if only for the Counting Your Blessings song which is tremendous.

Hell no! I'm with you on Der Bingle. Fred singing is OK as long as there isn't another good singer in the movie to show his limitations. The notes from Fred's first Hollywood screen test were, "Can't sing, can't act, can dance a little." That may have been a little harsh.

"You know Stone Pony, I've seen Sinatra, Bennett, Como, Williams, and Torme, but in all my years there's been none better than Crosby!" [/Hawk]

Oh, and may I offer up that "It's A Wonderful Life", classic that it is, is not a Christmas movie.

For the record - Planes Trains & Automobiles is a Thanksgiving movie though.

The main story line has absolutely nothing to do with Christmas. The fact that it just-so-happens that it occurs at some point during the Christmas season is irrelevant; the only time Christmas really comes into play is at the very end.

Full agreement on PT&A, though.

it is not irrelevant at all. the short story it's based on, "the greatest gift", plays with the idea of mortality and worth, all of which is surrounded by christmas...in its spiritual sense, it's about a man's struggle with himself and his duties to life (a reflection on the life of christ). in its literal sense, christmas is typically a high stress period for a lot of people. it's not at all accidental. it's part of the theme, MM. but thanks for trying.

Well, then, when they make an adaptation of ''The Greatest Gift'' and follow that particular story line, then I'll consider it to be a Christmas movie.

My wife taped this because it has Uggie (Jack Russell) in it.We own a Jack, too. What a startling fall from grace for this pooch. It went from the Oscar nominated "The Artist" to this low budget TV movie in a few years!

I actually never watched the whole thing. I'm hoping Ted Turner colorizes it first, than I'll watch.
