 Nothing wrong with Carbondale. I'd get a little cottage out near Giant City. Short drive to DuQuoin to train my colts on that forgiving clay surface. The pizza at Quatro's is acceptable. A lot of good fishing on Rend Lake and Crab Orchard. Check out the strippers at JB's or Gallery in DeSoto and grab a hillbilly six-pack for the ride home.

I wouldn't mind having a little shack in the Virgin Islands for between Bears-elimination-and-baseball-opening day season.

Nope. Illinois is stuck with me, hell wouldn't even move out of DuPage/Cook.

Besides Quatro's, that sounds as bad as being locked in a room with chas and Baby McCown.

Imagine if all of Chicagoland was Schaumburg. No downtown. No lake. No bungalows. that's what DFW is like. miles and miles of Schaumburg. only hotter. and no Italian beef. Crappy pizza. BARF.

My ex GF moved to Dallas earlier this year, and as some of you know, I have a lot of family that migrated down there. Had I still been with her, I would have probably moved down there with her.

She called me about a month ago and told me that she thinks she made a mistake moving because it's a family town, and she's a single lady. I think it was just her knee jerk reaction which she always does.

Sometimes I wonder if I should have done it, but oh well. Everything happens for a reason.

Your depiction of DFW is pretty spot on. A lot of damn expressways, too. Every year I go down there they are making a new one. We get one like what, once every 10 or so years?

I seriously considered this after my divorce was finalized but I don't have the kind of job that I can do
from wherever. I have nothing really holding me here long term, my family moved away years ago.

My suggestion is to create your plan on your destination, have your 3 week notice ready, your moving van/lines, your realtor crap, gas bill termination, electric , cable, etc. everything.

decide you are going to do it for sure, then vacation there for 2 weeks! or a week!

see where you want to live, eat, work, hangout...then go home and sign the listing agreeemnt, moving contract, 2 weeks notice etc or whatever those things are that are set to give notice to...or dont

I DIDNT move to vegas that way!

I wish I had the freedom of not having friends, family, community and a desire to live in a city that offers just about as great of cultural, intellectual, physical and spiritual diversity one could hope.

It saddens me that banality is now a preference in this country.

No,unless I can no longer afford it. If that happened,I would just go live over the border in Wisconsin.

We are talking about it.

It depends on a number of things related to family, but I would move to Florida in 4-5 years. I wouldn't want to be much older than 43-45 to make that move (38.5 now). Rah was born in California, so that's where she wants to go. My Engineers license is good in every state except California (because of the seismic activity) so work is not that big of a concern. Probably make more here tho.

They don't have trains in California?

I would like the Memphis/Nashville area. Went to Nashville once and loved it. Sadly, I'm the only one in my family who despises winter so we won't be going anywhere.

Brick, we live along the oceanfront. Long Island's more exposed to that than Manhattan, but essentially we're both in the same pan. NJ takes little more than 2" of rain to start flooding.

FF, you moved to Haltom City?!? Next time Kennedale! Get the red necks and the storms/flooding :-)

That's the thing. I could run my business from anywhere, but I'm a Chicagoan. I spent a few winters down in Florida and it was nice to escape the weather, but I was glad to head back in April. And there's no place like New York, but I'm not a New Yorker. I will eventually get out of this weather though. I'm thinking Carbondale or Lexington, KY or Pinehurst, NC. I'm just going to train a couple trotters all by myself. Maybe have a cute college girl who likes horses helping me out. Get up at 5 in the morning, hang around the track until noon, meet my wife for lunch, then go home and call RPB to find out how much we made moving bellies and beans around that day.

Divine Intervention.

When I came back from Vegas and was now contemplating the move, I saw the light! and it made me turn down Belmont Ave all the way down at Ohare! and I took Belmont all the way back into the city. Passing a few polish delis, taco stands, etc some pizza joints. Maybe half or more of them sucked, but I thought about going to like 2 pizza places the rest of my life. I mean when I feel like really being a pig and doing nothing, how can I pick up the phone and call Nancys for a STUFFED Pizza that i swear I wont ever order again, or No more Lous? Or no more Kaufmans? Mannys? WEINER CIRCLE! Lukes! Als! etc etc etc.

1990-2000--only decade in last 50 years that Chicago gained population.

2000-2010--Chicago had a net pop change of -200,000.

2010-2020 ???

The things that make Chicago a less than ideal place to live (weather, uninspiring landscape, rep for violence/shootings, shite public school system, high taxes, polacks) act as prophylactics against Chicago becoming unlivable like London or SF or NYC. From the outside looking in, Chicago's a somewhat scary place. Martin Amis once wrote that Chicago was the only city that really frightened him. While the Chicago violence that percolates up into the national/international consciousness is tragic and depressing, it keeps Chicago scary to outsiders.

i've moved enough in my life. if industry calls i'd prefer NY to LA but i'd really like to stay here and do everything satellite.

northern georgia isn't bad but you may as well live in the carolinas.

austin is basically texas's portland, or. if you ever went to portland and thought "fuck this place", don't move to austin.

FWIW the Raleigh-Durham area in NC is awesome. Beautiful scenery always a short drive away, mild winters, laid back people, etc. Can be cheap depending on personal circumstances.
