I'm moving to Del Boca Vista, phase two.

Gonna be on the board?

A few hours of listening to sports radio anywhere else (maybe not NYC) and you'd be pining for Larry and Meatpants.

DFW's idea of good pizza is Little Caesars.
Barf me out the door.

I would love to escape People Republic Illinois. It's fucked here. I can do what I do anywhere but hot ass summers and cold frickin winters make work here more steady?

FWIW the Raleigh-Durham area in NC is awesome.

Raleigh is a suburb of itself. Between the self-righteous college basketball fans and the Pittsburgh transplants, I think I'd lose my mind.

I will never move back to Illinois. Not so much to do with the weather (it's the same here), or the taxes (they suck in Illinois, I know. In PA we have a flat state tax and they take out only as much as they need - Imagine that! - and so there is never a refund nor bill) but more of quality of living. In Chicagoland, I would deal with higher cost of living, traffic, and my family.
Here cost of living is low (to make the equivalent of what I make here I would have to make 45K more a year)
While I live in the middle of nowhere, I am within an hour drive to most things. Let's say I wanted to go see Phish in Reading, PA a few months back, I could have gotten there in 45 minutes. If I lived in my hometown and they were playing at Allstate, it would have taken 45 minutes to an hour. United Center hour and a half.

If I were to move, the pull of family would pull us closer to Illinois/Michigan but I like the 300 mile buffer zone.

If I won the Mega Millions prize I would not only leave Illinois, but live a good part of the year in Australia/New Zealand/Fiji. Why live where it's cold, unless business interests/family keep you there? I would live in California (Simi Valley or Malibu) when in the states. I think the best way to know whether you really want to live somewhere, is to imagine that money/work concerns are not an issue. I would live where I could scuba dive, fish and golf any day I want.

Agreed on the Portland and Raleigh/Durham suggestions. Very nice areas with good people. I've visited both and would consider moving there if the right things happened.
