I hope all of you Cubs fans enjoyed the one year of BP Cup ownership because the Sox are back!
Hate to break the news but the BP CUP is no more ......... and Brooks Boyer is talking PROSPECTS
This from Crain's Danny Ecker:
When the Chicago Cubs and White Sox announced that oil giant BP had signed a three-year deal beginning in 2010 to be the title sponsor of their annual crosstown games, both teams lauded it as further evidence of the rivalry's intensity. It was also a great new asset for them to sell.
Three years later, the North Side-South Side showdown, branded through the sponsorship deal as the "Crosstown Cup," is smaller (four games instead of six), earlier in the season (it usually culminates in June) and is no longer attached to a corporate name.
But the 3-foot-tall, 15-pound silver trophy that debuted to a chorus of boos at Wrigley Field in 2010 (remember, it was just after BP's Deepwater Horizon rig explosion began leaking millions of gallons into the Gulf of Mexico) remains, and the teams plan to line up a new sponsor moving forward.
"We'll find the right partner for it down the road and get it sponsored at some point," said Brooks Boyer, the White Sox's marketing vice president. "We've got prospects."
