Okay, it seems like there is real interest in the subject, so why not. In my opinion the original was by far the best. That's why it won the Academy Award for best picture and had 10 nominations in 9 catagories at the awards in 1976. The Rocky sequels were all directed by Stallone himself, despite John Alvidsen winning the Academy award for Best Director in the original. I think that was a mistake. stallone was more concerned with putting on a glitzy show and having outrageous characters like Mr. T, Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), Thunder Lips (Hulk Hogan) Tommy Morrison and being as ripped as possible, rather than telling a great story well. The movies were still fun, but not what they could have been. I have to say, some of the fight scenes were better though. In the final installment, he has Alvidsen return to direct the movie and I think Rocky Balboa is probably my 2nd favorite in the bunch. Probabaly no coincidence.

They were all good, for different reasons. They fit the time.

Rocky was great.

Rocky II was also great but slightly less realistic.

Everything after was just entertainment. Never saw the last one.

Original Rocky was by far the best movie. But Rocky IV will always be my personal favorite. I am sure it has a lot to do with my age when it came out and how I was in awe of watching in in the big theater.

Rocky V was easily the worst of the movies, but it still had some funny stuff in it.

I was pleasantly surprised with how good Rocky Balboa was. I thought it was a nice capstone to the series.

Ran across this tonight. Anyone know any more about it?

Quote:
On July 24, 2013, it was announced that MGM has offered Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler to direct a spinoff of Rocky. The film will focus on a man following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Apollo Creed, and getting a mentor in the now-retired Rocky Balboa. Michael B. Jordan has been offered the role of Creed's grandson, and Stallone will reprise his character of Rocky, in a script co-written by Coogler and Aaron Covington.[1]

Rocky balboa was a nice way to end it. They order from best to worst is probably the order they were released. One of the last non kid movies I saw in the theater.

Rocky Balboa was way better than Rocky V.

Can't disagree with ES, though I haven't seen Rocky Balboa.

As I mentioned in the other thread, though somewhat facetiously, I think the musical score had a lot to do with the franchise's success, particularly the original movie. Everyone knows the "Gonna Fly Now" theme, but the entire soundtrack is phenomenal and evokes the feel of blue-collar Philly in the 70s.

I think Rocky deserved its win for Best Picture, despite most people arguing it should have been Taxi Driver. However, the sequels were just retreads of the same formula.

I can't figure out how it's a wonderful life was a box office flop. Crazy shit happens with those awards.

The first Rocky was the best film
rocky 2 was the best overall with the best fight and round (15) in boxing history
rocky 4 is the most entertaining and action movie type
rocky 3 had a good story but was not as good as its predecessors
Rocky Balboa was a good end to it all

There are other Rocky threads. And I'm not complaining about it, just saying thoughts have been written

Never enough Rocky

"One more thread"

I'll admit, I liked him trying to get with Adrian in Rocky I.

"Yo Adrian, you wanna go to a basketball game? 76ers are playin' at the Spectrum."

"I'm gonna think up a joke for you tomorrow."

Loved the training sequence in III. Very ocean-dancy.

Saw IV as a yout' with the boys so it also has a special place.

Other than the working title being "Creed", I know what you have here. Stallone mentors the Grandson of Appolo Creed in the movie.

Fun Rocky fact:
The 2 turtles (cuff and Link) that appear in the original Rocky, also appear in Rocky Balboa which was made 30 years later.

I though Rocky vs. The Soviet union was a little too cheesy. Even as a kid.

I never understood how Rocky got smart in Rocky III. Like all of a sudden he was well spoken. Doesn't make sense. He should have been dumber after all the hits he took. Then they made him dumb again in the final two movies.

I had the idea for a movie called "Creed "a long time ago but it was a prequel about Apollos rise and Tony finding him on the mean streets of LA and nbringing him up and making him The Master of Disaster and Count of Monte Fisto

You a damned fool! Maybe we ought to sign Mrs. Balboa to fight Cane, huh? Looks like she's the only one with the cajones in this family.

Why did Adrian let Rocky go to the commercials in 2? She was 100 percent aware of the fact that he couldn't read AT ALL....she knew it would be a problem and she fucking watched him get humiliated

This on top of always telling her husband he's going to fail

Worst wife ever

Got that right. Tommy Morrison was awful and the kid with the ear ring and the "home team" stuff...bad. The only thing that gives it any redeption is watching Morrison get hammered.

Pretty solid list.

One I would add to it would be the flash back scene that takes place in IV after Adrian tells him he cannot win. Driving around with No Easy Way out playing.

I'd say the emotional apex was just before that, when Creed sends him to the canvas with the wild uppercut (right after "what is keeping him up?"). Rocky struggles to gather himself and eventually gets up, with Creed looking on in disbelief and pity that he has to resume the fight.
