I just want to make sure I'm not completely crazy here -- so here are two scenarios... please read and vote.

Scenario A) You have a recipe that you are expected to prepare for Christmas Eve dinner. People are expecting this recipe, and at this late date, you cannot substitute another. This recipe calls for two bags of fresh cranberries. You go to the store and there are two bags of fresh cranberries left. There are also some frozen cranberries that you could probably work with, although it would take you longer to make your recipe. You take both bags of the fresh cranberries, even though you highly suspect other shoppers will require bags of cranberries and will prefer the fresh bags.

Scenario B) You have a recipe that you are expected to prepare for Christmas Eve dinner. People are expecting this recipe, and at this late date, you cannot substitute another. Your recipe does not call for chopped walnuts. There is one bag of chopped walnuts left. There are also some whole, shelled walnuts that someone could likely chop on their own if they needed to, at an additional time cost to them. You purchase the bag of chopped walnuts even though you highly suspect other shoppers require a bag of chopped walnuts, but can live with the whole walnuts.

Your opinions?

Man, I wish chopping walnuts was the biggest problem I had this weekend.

If you are the food purchaser you buy everything and let the person cooking sort it out.

And you should always buy what looks best.

If your recipe doesn't require chopped walnuts, why are you worried about getting them?

As for the cranberry scenario, why are you worried about what other shoppers need? If you're going to the store & need something, you buy it.

The cranberries are called for in the recipe so getting them makes sense. The 2nd scenario stated the recipe does NOT call for walnuts, so why is there any debate over whether to buy a bag or not?

This has to be the least consequential personal dilemma ever posted here.

I don't think A makes you anything but an ordinary shopper who happened to take the last two bags. Perhaps you could buy one frozen package and one fresh package to leave at least one fresh bag left. I don't know though if that would mess up your recipe.

I think either one is fine. You got to the items first and bought them. It's not really your duty to consider what some other goof may or may not need. I just can't figure out why the fuck you bought the walnuts. Maybe next time you should send someone to do the shopping who isn't such an impulse buyer.

Buy whatever you want. It's not your responsibility to consider what future shoppers may or may not purchase.

I had a similar dilemma when I bought the last Ferrari. There was also 1 Bentley left and I didn't really need the Bentley but I thought I could probably chop it up and use the parts so I got both. Dick move?

I don't get it. Buy the cranberries because you need them and then head straight to checkout. You don't need the walnuts so I don't even know why you are in that aisle contemplating a purchase of something you have no need for.

To be honest, that is the reason I bought the walnuts.

Just having a disagreement with the wife that the motive for these two actions is probably different for most people. The first one, the motive is that you require the good, that's why you are getting it... in the second, you don't require it, so you are getting it either on speculation that you may need it and it is in scarce supply, or you are getting it just to spite other people who may want it. The effect the first action has on other people is much more a side effect of buying the cranberries than it is the actual motivation for the action. In the second instance, I think there is a lot more ambiguity in the purchase, but I think I would lean more towards dick move than OK.

Of course, I had to drop this argument about twenty seconds into it because this sort of discussion would soon devolve into why I leave my socks on the floor by my desk or why I don't keep the kitchen table cleaned off before I go to bed every night. So I bring the argument to you knuckleheads.

I swear to God I thought this was going to turn out being an allegory about the Affordable Care Act or something. I'm trying to assign all the symbolism in my head ("OK, so cranberries are BlueCross BlueShield. The nuts are I don't know, let's say jews ") and it ends up being about actual cranberries and walnuts. Well done.
