first I would like to say to almost everyone here, I am proud nobody took any stand on the issue.

Second is someone shocked that Phil Robertson, 67, the father in DD believes that gays live in sin? Is this a shocking revelation to anyone?

And that he has some other not so PC views of Blacks, most likely everyone else.

Then all the ANTI GAY groups come out on every single TV station to show A&E their disgust.

While maybe they get 15 mins of fame for the GLAADFME group, they just pumped up the DD brand name bigger than it has ever been. While A&E suspended Phil from the show and now the others are boycotting it the money on the line is HUGE $$$. It is already their biggest show and now, the haters will be watching so you can double or triple the ratings if they allow phil back.

So, I guess Phil reads an apology and gets another $5M?

Just hysterical watching the people that want to tear this guy down by talking about it on every news talk show, that all they have done is created a bigger monster.

I thought this show was about to run its course, but now they are about to become Redneck Royalty, like the Kennedys of the Swamp!

My first two thoughts before reading the GQ article:
  1. What is sin?
  2. What do rednecks believe?

I may not be in lockstep with what Phil believes but I fully believe he has the freedom to think it.

He is born again so he has some literal interpretations of the Bible. I just love how you can only be intolerant of one way of thinking.

It's reality tv. He said something unscripted and off the cuff. I'm so shocked.

Nothing is surprising about this and I really don't care what some douchenozzle on a reality TV show says, but if I see one more person try to cite the first amendment in this case, I'm going to beat them over the head with a bag of duck calls.

And dicks.

I hope this doesn't adversely effect the thriving gay duck hunting scene.

An editorial that asks and answers the same thing, from an unlikely source. Much of the outrage is manufactured to create another "look at this/me" situtation. Like the plurality of reality shows, I find little that I appreciate and too much that I object to. But I realize that they have their audience and I have the choice to ignore.

They used to at least pretend that these shows were quasi-documentaries.

I'm trying to understand your post.

Are you saying that he doesn't have rights by virtue of the 1st amendment to say what he said?

I'm guessing it's due to the people saying he shouldn't be suspended from the show because of the 1st amendment.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances

Nothing in there even remotely close about not getting suspended from your reality TV show for expressing your opinions.

yeah idk how much vitriol there was in what he actually said, but by and large you'd better publicly like (or perhaps not-dislike is more apropos) any sort of minority these days because the thought police are coming for you. i've seen some ppl freak out that the european union wants to make some law where criticizing Feminism is grounds for some sort of criminal offense.... or they wanna group feminists in with a bunch of other minorities, altho that's only if anti-semitism gets a special elevated level of punishment because that's more important than all the rest of them (and that was literally the quote i read by one of the EU parliament members =)

it's kind of like when dog the bounty hunter was exposed as being a "secret" racist..... it's like NAWWW.... you're shitting me.... THE DOG is racist? not in a million years!

So you're not supposed to express your opinions on a reality tv show ?? Or rather, the producers of said reality tv show don't want you to express them? no, no ,no,. Just sit there and do something…..hillbilly.

Well, the opinions that got him in trouble were expressed in an interview outside of the show...but yeah, your point is why I don't feel bad for A&E one bit...what did they think they were getting when they gave these guys a show?

Do you guys think that this is similar to a regular person losing their job for what an employer would consider an unfavorable message/post on social media?

I think the most hilarious part is that they will run DD marathons on A&E right now. Also, the next season is taped already and will be broadcast. He is on "hiatus" once they got the money in the bag. If they wanted to please GLAAD they wouldn't show another new one or rerun. Follow the money.

Would depend how much the person connects their place of employment to their social media behavior, I would suppose...

Rule of thumb I was taught in the HR semester of school was that if it could be construed that you are representing your employer in any way, you should expect there to be consequences...of course, they were more talking along the lines of "don't be an asshole in public while you are wearing a shirt with the company logo and pay with your company credit card"...but I'd guess they are addressing social media in that class now.

...my current employer decided a few years ago to create social media guidelines...probably because people have a habit of posting really stupid work related shit on Facebook and (to a lesser extent) twitter. Gist of it is the same...if you are going to advertise that you work for the company, don't be a douche.

I work with a lot of people who have said far worse this than this...but they also don't do magazine interviews and share it for public consumption.

You can probably count the number of fans he has lost on one hand. This just solidifies his base.

well its like Steve Stone has always said re: questionable character players, deficient in some area players. When you cast your lot with Frankenstein , don't be surprised when he starts tearing down the village (or something to that effect).
