he has admitted he has to pretty much thank river phoenix's death for his career. most of the early roles he got (including "basketball diaries") were going to river phoenix.

Yes as a child he was good. Now he just looks like a child playing dress up. It was the main reason I disliked The Aviator.

"the aviator" bored me to tears. di caprio has been good in "shutter island" and "catch me if you can" (even though he was completely miscast for the role) in his adult years.

I had already read Shutter Island before the movie so I wasnt all that impressed with it.

I liked Catch Me if you Can but I am a Tom Hanks fan so I dont know how much that skewed my judgment.

I didnt think DiCaprio did all that badly here . Just wasn't given a lot to work with. How many scenes of wretched excess and debauchery can you sell in a movie anyway?

one of my favorite roles he did was actually his small cameo in "celebrity" as a coked out actor version of himself. that's probably the most natural i've seen him.

For the those with a brain and some patience The Aviator is a solid film, DiCaprio was good in it but was miscast.

I do agree with the general take on him, though.

Why people think this guy is some great actor is beyond me. He plays the same cocksure little twerpy skinny shit in every movie he is in.

I literally have not bought ANY character he has portrayed - I have always seen, just. .. . him, a perrrenially-underaged-looking guy who seems to always be playing guys much older than he appears to be.

He's one of those Hollywood types whom you KNOW has sucked plenty of dick for roles, and by now, he probably likes it like Travolta.

So you are saying you don't like him?

I don't hate the guy. I liked "Catch me if you can" & "the Departed". He does come off as a brash punk in a lot of his roles though.

Yeah I think Gangs of New York and Catch me if you can were his best roles by far. He's ok in Django. Departed and Shutter Island sucked.

I like The Departed but it was just good for me, not great. Could have been great if:

No Boston accents
Less of the annoying whore girlfriend
Jack Nicholson actually wanting to act instead of just showing up and cashing his checks

Hank,
What blew it for me is when the crowd at the show started giggling in the last 10 minutes when just about all the cast "has bad luck" in 3 or 4 scenes in a row.

come on, "gangs of new york"? what was your favorite part of his performance? his off and on "irish" accent, or his inability to even pretend to look like a tough guy? there is one reason to see that movie, and it is solely for the performance of daniel day-lewis. other than that it's a huge mixed bag, and a lot of it is awful.

I generally like his movies. They are almost always entertaining. I think he was a better actor earlier in his career. Now he is a box office dynamo. Big name movies, with big time casts/directors where he doesn't need to put in the effort.

He is having a similar career path to that of Tom Cruise.

for the most part, fortunately...tom cruise at least abandons the accent attempts. he learned his lesson after "far & away" i suppose. his accent in "interview" was subtle, not forced...even though it also wasn't very good.

I believed him as the torchered son hellbent on revenge. I thought he played off DDL well.

I love that movie though. Maybe Im giving him too much credit.

No, you aren't. DiCaprio was fine in it, nothing crazy spectacular but his performance was fine. It was an above average film.

it's because of lewis's performance that blinds a lot of people to its mediocrity. it has a lot of potential but drowns itself in a banal love story that isn't credible, bloated sequences that don't push the story forward, and ancillary characters that aren't interesting.

setting up the story to be about the 5 points was promising but scorcese was past his prime to make an effective movie about it. it remains a very flawed film, but is almost redeemed by the character of bill the butcher.

yeah it's very rare that an american can pull off an accent and make it credible. i will say, i used to think don cheadle was british (i first noticed him in "oceans 11").

It's funny the discussion came up today. The movie was on at midnight last night. I find it to be pretty worthless but for the opening scene.

You, movie guy, first noticed Don Cheadle in Oceans 11?

Surprising. Would think you would have remembered Traffic
