pre 2013- we dont even know if we have the capability to fuse atoms with lasers efficiently
post- we have proven we can shoot atoms with lasers, and the fusion reaction produces more power then it took to start.

we are close.

i think making the lasers efficient enough to start the fusion process without exceeding the amount of energy that the fusion emits was the hard part.
