Quote:
When Alexis Valdez’s aunt told her do-nothing nephew that she wanted him out of her Northwest Side apartment, he decided to leave her a Christmas Eve “present.”

The gift Valdez left on his aunt’s bed, Cook County prosecutors alleged in court Friday, was the severed head of her boyfriend, Silvestri Diaz

After prosecutors outlined one of the more gruesome crimes in recent memory at the George Leighton Criminal Courthouse, Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas ordered Valdez — a slight 18-year-old with no known criminal history — held without bond.

In court, Assistant State’s Attorney Kingsley Sawyers said Valdez moved in with his aunt and Diaz about six months ago. Valdez was allowed to move into the apartment, in the 2500 block of N. Kildare, on the condition that he go to school, work and contribute to household expenses, Sawyers said. But eventually, Valdez stopped working and he was asked to move out.

On Christmas Eve, while the aunt was attending a party, Valdez started drinking and became angry at being forced to move out. At some point, Diaz came home to the apartment and went with Valdez to a store to buy more beer.

“Before leaving to go to the store, the defendant took a hammer from the porch and hid it by the door so that he could kill the victim after they returned home,” Sawyers said.

When Valdez and Diaz returned, Valdez unleashed his fury, smashing Diaz in the head multiple times with the hammer, prosecutors alleged. Diaz fell to the floor. When Diaz was dead, Valdez dismembered the body, eventually cutting off Diaz’s head as he played loud music to conceal his actions, Sawyers said.

Valdez also used a butcher knife to cut off Diaz’s ears, nose and mouth, Sawyers said. Valdez allegedly continued acting on his rage by pulling out Diaz’s eyes with his bare hands. He also cut off Diaz’s arms and sliced the dead man’s torso from his neck to his pelvis, Sawyers said.

Valdez left the head, ears and nose on Diaz’s bed because he wanted to leave his aunt a present, Sawyers said.

Valdez eventually became exhausted from cutting up the body, Sawyers said. He called 911 to report a dead body. When the 911 operator asked Valdez if he’d tried CPR, “the defendant laughed and told the 911 operator that the victim had been decapitated,” Sawyers said.

When police arrived, Valdez was covered in blood and admitted to killing Diaz, Sawyers said.

“The defendant also admitted that he was angry with his aunt and the victim, and that if his aunt had come home and seen the victim’s body, then he would have killed her as well,” Sawyers said.

This was an interesting article. What I found most fascinating, however, was the first comment underneath the story, from Alfreda Calbert:

Sadly, this is why so many people are homeless. Some of them are of them are there because they are rotten and lazy and think the world owes them something.

I am guessing that Alfreda Calbert must be a sociologist, or at least an expert on homelessness.

Sadly? I think the aunt would gladly trade having a homeless nephew for a living boyfriend...

Sadly, this is also why some people are headless.

Well, the punk won't have to worry about being homeless anymore. He will have a permanent home with the Department of Corrections.

I try to learn something new every day. What I have learned today from Alfreda Calbert is that many homeless people have decapitated someone.

I also learned that this young man was at least thoughtful enough to personally deliver the gift, instead of relying upon UPS or Federal Express, which might have resulted in his Aunt only getting the severed head today, totally not in time for Christmas.

How angry do you have to be to sever someone's head, and saw off many of their limbs? I have been extremely angry several times in my life, but I have never decapitated anybody. That is really taking one's game to another level.

I am proud to say that NOT ONCE has it ever even crossed my mind that decapitating A.J. Burnett or Phil Hughes would be a good idea. Pounding them senseless? Perhaps. Once they were unconscious, however, I would definitely stop the beating.

For such a gruesome, disturbing story, the article starts out unnervingly light-hearted.

Because whoever wrote the article has a screw loose. They weren't shy about talking about what body parts the kid cut off.

Dim is right about the Sun Times.

Head Games is my favorite song by Foreigner.

C'mon,sing it with me!

Daylight, alright
I don't know, I don't know if it's real
Been a long night and something ain't right
You won't show, you won't show how you feel

No time ever seems right
To talk about the reasons why you and I fight
It's high time to draw the line
Put an end to this game before it's too late

Head games, it's you and me baby
Head games, and I can't take it anymore
Head games, I don't wanna play the...
Head games

I daydream for hours it seems
I keep thinkin' of you, yeah, thinkin' of you
These daydreams, what do they mean?
They keep haunting me, are they warning me?

Daylight turns into night
We try and find the answer but it's nowhere in sight
It's always the same and you know who's to blame
You know what I'm sayin', still we keep on playin'

Head games, that's all I get from you
Head games, and I can't take it anymore
Head games, don't wanna play the...
Head games

So near, so far away
We pass each other by 'cause we don't know what to say
It's so clear, I'm sorry to say
But if you wanna win you gotta learn how to play

Head games, always you and me, baby
Head games, 'till I can't take it anymore
Head games, instead of makin' love
Head games, ooh

Head games, always you and me, baby
Head games, 'till I can't take it anymore, no more
Head games, instead of makin' love, we play
Head games

Head games, in the first degree
Head games, yeah, always you and me
Head games, why do you do it baby?
Head games

That was a lot of hard labor. What makes someone "snap" like that? Considering it was premeditated that makes it even worse. When your wife or girlfriend asks you about letting a relative stay for a while you might want to show her this.
