Why? You think they were going to win the Super Bowl? Even with other teams as bad as they are there was no way this team would make it thru the playoffs. I never expected them to succeed. The talent isn't there, and neither was the coaching for this year. Don't know if that will change or not.

There are too many questions for my comfort. That's not good.

While you're enjoying this Bears defeat, what was that you said about Forte?

All I can say is that that mf did work. Too bad it was wasted.

And any enjoyment is at the expense of the McClaskey's missing out on $15MM on a playoff game. I hate that god damned family.

It is my belief that any team that makes the playoffs has a chance to win it all. Shit happens. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Eagles in the SB or the Chargers.

Next season I think you'll be right. He's carried the load for too long now. He'll probably take a step back. Hopefully it isn't a big step.

Why not? They were getting healthy and the offense was rolling before Cutler came back. With him being healthy and knocking the rust off the expectation was for them to continue at the level or get better.

He won't. He'll be gone in a couple of years or have to rework his deal. He won't be worth $9M in the last year of his deal.

I'm definitely fine with him next season. I've always been troubled by how easy he goes down. But still, he's been incredibly productive. RB simply isn't that important anymore, and to the degree it is, he's definitely been one of the better backs in the league.

Those of you who are calling this season a failure are shortsighted & need to think long term. When a team brings in a completely new coaching staff & system, seldom is that team fortunate enough to be in a position to battle for a playoff spot. Sure they choked on the last 2 games, but if you look at the big picture, this team is transitioning into a modern NFL team with a real offense, after many many years of complete incompetency on the offensive side of the ball, both from coaches & players. Trestman fixed the Bears offense in one season, & it will continue to get better. Sure, the Bears defense was worse than most people thought it would be, but injuries are a reality & losing Tillman, Briggs, and a few others, along with Peppers being absolutely terrible, put this team in a bad position.
The Bears defense will be better next year. More than half the team are free agents & many of them thankfully will be gone.
Give Trestman & the new Bears regime a chance to bring in their own players & implement their systems.

The Bears organization took a big step forward this year.

Yes, the offense made strides, but it is simply unacceptable to lose the most important game of the season at the time - in Philly to make the playoffs - by 43 points. It was a complete no-show, and to make the game not competitive at all despite the stakes means you put on a putrid performance that should be roundly criticized.

Comparatively, here are how some other new coaches fared:

Bruce Arians: 10-6 in a division that included SF and SEA, and missed the playoffs by only thismuch.

Chip Kelly: Playoffs (and crushing the Bears just for fun while he was at it, since the Eagles could have rested their starters that game anyway)

Mike McCoy: Playoffs in a division that included KC and Denver.

So yes, I think it's a failure to not win the division when you are 8-6 and have to win one more to put the Packers away. Also, the Packers were missing Rodgers for over a month and Detroit collapsed, leaving the division right there for you.

Someone just called in with pretty much this train of thought. Mully said "I knew the Bears defense was soft but I didn't know their fanbase was"

Scorehead, you really sound like a kool aid drinking Cub fan with this rationalization.

PLAYOFFS!

I doubt very few can pick today who will be in the Super Bowl but I can tell you with certainty who won't be in that game. The teams that don't make the playoffs. The only true Super Bowl caliber teams are the ones that make the playoffs.

Yes the offense improved, tremendously, but this last loss was symbolic of how this team has played all season. No lead is safe because the defensive scheme is extremely suspect. You have 4th and long, you're supposed to play a prevent shell, and you get beat deep. Its one thing to be unable to stop the run but another to not stay deep on the most critical play of the game.

Spare me the excuses for Mel Tucker save for the fact that he has one defensive end (#1 pick) sharing time with a guy signed mid-season as a free agent. The next line stunt will be the first. Keeping the strong safety in the box means the free safety has to cover too much field, which means having cornerbacks cover 30 yards downfield. Except on the last f****ng play when the decision is to still have the corners cover in trail technique 30 yards downfield, and the safeties play up.

Cutler didn't stink but McCown proved that the offense is most lethal when the ball is spread arond indiscriminantly. Cutler will eat a sack trying to find a double-covered Marshall.

Its not being shortsighted but realistic, the playoffs were squandered. They can go 11-5 and still not make the playoffs, so going 9-7 and getting in is an improvement over last season. Either way, the honeymoon is now over for Trestman and Emery. The benchmark is there, this team did not meet it.

And they had almost no quality wins. The only wins against winning teams were opening day against Cincy and the win against GB where Rodgers was hurt. Other than that, they were either bumslayers or losers.

The season was a failure.

I knew it was a fumble as soon as it left Rodgers hand. Knew it. It was so frustrating to see our fucking linebacker skip past the ball. Had he picked it up I think he scores. The right side of the field was open and he was probably gonna get a convoy of blockers.

Then the Packers had the delay of game on 4th and one. I'm pretty sure that was reviewable. I think I've seen it done before. Correct me if I'm wrong. I was screeming for Trestman to throw the flag. Not blaming him. Somebody in the booth needed to tell him.

Also, Trestman needed to use his 2 time outs during that last Packers drive. We could have had the ball back with like a minute had he done so.

I think the bigger question is why Cutler threw the Hail Mary on 3rd down rather than try to get a smaller chunk and then possibly having a much more manageable throw into the end zone on the final play. Was that Cutler's call or Trestman's?

I was fine with the early hail mary. You got two big boys in Marshall and Jeffery.

Then he did hit Marshall in the gut for what would have been a 20 yard gain. Droped it. We had a time out. Would have set up a good chance.

Not to mention the ball Jeffery dropped earlier in the 4th.

Cutler had a decent game. Would have been a great game if Jeffery makes that catch.

I think the smaller chunk throw you mean is the one to marshall in the middle of the field, which he dropped despite being wide open.

Fuck Trestman. He should get the Chudzinski treatment. He had a team stacked with offensive weapons with a new competent o-line, of course the fucking offense was going to be good. He cant make coaching decisions, he's Lovie 2.0. I want a coach that can actually think and make solid decisions. Quit giving the team a guy that is an idiot savant on one side of the ball.

Fuck.

Yes, but they still had two plays left with 10 seconds and a timeout. Don't see the point in just giving up the extra play unless they thought they would catch the Packers by surprise. The earlier drop should not have mattered in that decision.

A better defense isnt going to teach him how to make in game decisions. He goes for it on 4th down seemingingly at random, he choose when to kick FGs at random (both down and distance). He's a fucking O-Coordinator. Nothing more and quite possible much less. He is out coached every game. In the NFC north. Think about the collection of simpletons that coach in the North. 2 of them are going to be fired.

Every game matters and stupid coaching is not forgiveable.

That's a bit much.

Keep in mind EVERY NFL coach ever has made terribly dumb decisions.

Its one year and he fixed the offense. Give him another year
