Depending on how the guarantees are constructed they could get out of it after a year. Guarantees aren't always guarantees in the NFL.

Cutler would never agree to a deal this quick with a team out that favorable.

4 years seems about right for something that both sides would agree to. That would get Cutler about $60-65 million I would think over that time.

Next year may be rough. Looking at that schedule I doubt the Bears will finish .500 UNLESS the defense becomes great overnight.

You're right. I just hope the first year cap number is under $10M.

Bears resign Jay Cutler through 2020; since joining the Bears in 2009, he has thrown interceptions on 3.6% of passes (3rd-highest in NFL).

Per @alexmarvez, Cutler extension averages $18M in the first 3 years. That suggests a guarantee in the $50M-$55M range, which sounds right.

Cutler had what most would say was his best season this year. With one of the best (the best?) WR tandem in the NFL, a good all purpose RB, and a solid pass catching TE....he had the same QBR as Alex Smith.

Yeah, stats are funny. His QBR this year was better than Tom Brady's

If this deal is cost effective, Cutler keeps improving within the system, and they add some key components on the O and D then it's all seashells and balloons.

Until they lose a game next year

All I have to say, that's a lot of money for a guy that has won one playoff game in 5 years.

Big mistake....the signing, not describing another one of Jay's Passes. The guy has a good arm and can make all the throws. he's a smart guy too. But he has a huge ego and makes bad decisions with the football far too often, because he believes he can make plays he shouldn't even be attempting. He's not young anymore. He is, what he is and that is, a guy who will get his team to the playoffs now and then, but never be able to avoid mistakes enough to win in the playoffs, except a single game here or there.

I know but I disagree. Some of those bad teams will be good next season. Injuries made them bad. The Packers and the Lions will be tough too. It's really hard for me to see many of those teams being bad.

Against a team that was 7-9 in the regular season that year. Then he turned around and crapped the bed against GB in the next game.

I'm sure once they get All Pros at each position , Jay will be fine.

The thing that scared me the most about the bears was that they would maximize value across the entire team by having trestman develop a cost controlled young qb. That would have given them the ability to invest heavily in the defense and o line.

The offense looked real good at times this year, but this is a league of adjustments. We shall see what kind of blueprint teams come up with to shut down or at least contain Marshall and Jeffrey.

Signing him to a huge contract shows me both Emery & Trestman are two guys that are in love with stats & figures. They don't factor in where this guy is in crunch time the past 5 years, injury prone, etc.

I would have been fine with giving him one more chance next year with the franchise tag.

Doesn't he have the best QBR in the 4th quarter of any QB?

Regardless of his stats (which are thoroughly mediocre), he can't stay healthy. This is a negligent contract, which I should have expected from the Bears.

Hard to adjust height. If the receiver is 6'4/ 6'5, and the QB can put the ball up high to the receiver, it's awfully difficult for a corner/safety that is 5'10 to cover them. They are both big/strong receivers who are tough to jam at the line. I'm not sure they can be diminished by a scheme very much and the more they try, the more Forte is likely to prosper.

His health is (or should have been) a major concern. Especially since concussions are a part of the equation with him.

It's the other 3 quarters he sucks in.

This is an outrage! What in the hell has he ever proven in his career!? This is negligent and reckless. One playoff win. ONE. He is 30 years old. Unreal.

I expect Forte to lose a step next season. No way he can continue to carry the load he has carried since he has been a Bear.
